Introduction to Learning to Hear God’s Voice Series

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (ESV)
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • 1 Thess. 5:23 has done more for my spiritual life probably than any other verse.
  • It solved all types of problems for me.

[Tweet “1 Thess. 5:23 will help your spiritual life immeasurably. It will help you in hearing God.”]

  • The first church I attended after I came to Jesus was a church where they used the terms ‘spirit’ and ‘soul’ interchangeably.
  • You would hear things like “I thank God, He saved my soul”, in that church.
or you might hear something like “I am so thankful Jesus came into my heart.”
  • Heart and soul were used interchangeably in that church giving the impression that they were the same.
  • If you interchange spirit and soul, you will have problems when you read Hebrews 4:12.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV )
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

  • ‘Dividing asunder’ is King James language.
  • Hear this verse in a more modern translation.

Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  • This scripture states soul and spirit can be divided apart from each other and if they can be, they can’t be the same.

1 Samuel 1:15 (ESV)
15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord.

Isaiah 26:9 (ESV)
9 My soul yearns for you in the night; my spirit within me earnestly seeks you. For when your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.

  • You see, there are several verses in the Bible that help us to know spirit and soul are not the same.
  • This distinction helps us a great deal in hearing God.
  • In order to move God, you have to be able to hear God.
  • Hearing God is never about your ability to listen, it’s about knowing where to listen.
  • Hearing God is all about location.
