#S2-036: Why Hearing is the Most Necessary Healing Component [Podcast]

Healing for the Sick God's Way

When the telegraph was the fastest means of long-distance communication, a young man applied for a job as a Morse code operator. Answering an ad in the newspaper, he went to the address that was listed. When he arrived, he entered a large, noisy office. In the background a telegraph clacked away. A sign on the receptionist’s counter instructed job applicants to fill out a form and wait until they were summoned to enter the inner office. The young man completed his form and sat down with seven other applicants. After a few minutes, the young man stood up, crossed the room to the door of the inner office, and walked right in. The other applicants perked up, wondering what was going on. Why had this man been so bold? They muttered among themselves that they hadn’t heard any summons yet. They took more than a little satisfaction in assuming the young man who went into the office would be reprimanded for his presumption and summarily disqualified for the job. Within a few minutes the young man emerged from the inner office escorted by the interviewer, who announced to the other applicants, “Gentlemen, thank you very much for coming, but the job has been filled by this young man.” The other applicants began grumbling. Then one spoke up saying, “Wait a minute—I don’t understand something. He was the last one to come in, and we never even got a chance to be interviewed. Yet he got the job. That’s not fair.” The employer said, “I’m sorry, but all the time you’ve been sitting here, the telegraph has been ticking out the following message in Morse code: ‘If you understand this message, then come right in. The job is yours.’ None of you heard it or understood it. This young man did. So the job is his.” 1 Godly results come from hearing God. Are you tuned into God’s Morse code?

Isaiah 6:10 (KJV)
10 Make the heart of this people fat, And make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; Lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

  • Notice the four components for healing listed in this passage.
    • Seeing with your eyes.
    • Hearing with your ears.
    • Understanding with your heart.
    • And, allowing these three elements to convert your thinking.
  • When you engage these four components healing is the result.

The Temptation to By-Pass Hearing the Word

  • We love in a fast paced, microwave, get it done right now, because we got stuff to do, society.
  • We have to make money, raise children, repair homes, do projects, and we have to do it right now or so it seems.
  • Computers were supposed to make things easier so we could get have more free time. They didn’t.
  • The last technological innovations of the 21st century were supposed to give us more free time. They didn’t.
  • We have been sold on the idea that the newest is better and better means more free time. It didn’t.
  • With this mindset, habitually engrained in our psyches, we approach a God who never changes.
  • We need to be healed. And, we need it right now. After all, we have stuff to do.
  • It seems like the last thing we have time for is a Bible lesson.
  • We think, “We don’t have time to hear. Just lay hands on me. Just pray. You do it. I don’t have time to do it.”
  • Just a quick prayer should do it, we think.
  • When that doesn’t work, and it won’t. You can’t rush spiritual things. We head to medical science with the same impatience.
  • Interesting thing about this whole process.
    • We have time to let the doctors do their thing.
    • We have time to hear what they have to say.
    • We have to follow their directives, their terms and their time schedule and their pace.
    • God, we don’t have time to hear. We treat Him differently.
  • The truth is you may be in a rush but God isn’t.
  • And He hasn’t changed. Despite the pace of the 21st century, God is still the same (Ps. 102:27).

[Tweet “The truth is you may be in a rush but God isn’t.”]

Malachi 3:6 (KJV)
6 For I am the Lord, I change not; Therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

  • God doesn’t change and never will.
  • Through 6000 years of the human endeavor, His program is still the same.
  • He is consistently constant all the time.
  • Malachi 3:6 is a wonderful healing verse to think on.
  • God doesn’t change. So from a healing standpoint that means if God ever healed anybody, He will heal you.
  • If God ever did a miracle for any human person, He will do one for you.
  • But, how does healing come?
  • We saw the components in Isaiah 6:10.
  • It comes by hearing.

Luke 5:15 (KJV)
15 But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

  • Notice the order and don’t forget it.
  • The multitudes came to hear and to be healed.
  • They didn’t come just to get healed. They came to hear something.
  • Hearing came first then came healing.
  • Jesus just didn’t show up and announce a healing line and go right into praying for people.
  • Jesus didn’t just zap people with His power. He taught them first.
  • Notice also, the scripture says, “…there was a great multitude…”
    • Great multitude means a great crowd.
    • It means lots of people.
    • Lots of people means lots of needs.
    • With all that need staring Jesus in the face, He took the time to teach something.
    • He took the time to put the Word in people’s ears.
  • Why?
  • Because, faith comes by hearing.
  • Jesus didn’t heal this great multitude with His special powers as the Son of God.
  • He worked in line with faith.
  • He worked in conjunction with the Word.
  • What Jesus did you can do. He taught.
  • What the crowd did, you can do. They listened.
  • Your need may be great.
  • Your physical situation severe.
  • But if you hear, you can be healed.
  • This Bible truth reduced to simplest terms is simply this.
  • If you don’t get the hearing, you don’t get the healing.
  • So, hear and be healed.

Luke 6:17 (KJV)
17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

  • Does this sound familiar?
  • Another great multitude.
  • Another great pile of needs.
  • What did Jesus do in this case? Did He do anything different?
  • No, He did the exact same thing He did in the last example.
  • He taught.
  • He put out the Word.
  • The Word is the key, not the laying of hands, not people praying, the Word.
  • You have to hear the Word.
  • He gave this great multitude who came out of the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon something to hear.
  • Teaching was Jesus MO.
  • It’s how He moved. It’s how He operated. It’s how He ministered.
  • If the people heard it, the Word He taught generated the faith they needed to be well.
  • That faith, coupled with the anointing which was upon Jesus life, drove out sickness and disease by the bushel basket load.
  • You have to dislodge the idea that you can receive anything from God apart from His Word.

Matthew 4:23 (KJV)
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

  • This may sound repetitive to you because here is yet another verse reiterating the same hearing principle.
  • Whenever you see something like this stand up and take notice.
  • Bible repetition is a clue.
  • Bible repetition means emphasis.
  • Again, look at the order here in Matthew 4:23.
    • Teaching in their synagogues.
    • Preaching the gospel of the kingdom.
    • Then came the healing of all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
  • Yet one more time, teaching and preaching comes before healing.
  • If you want to be healed, hear the teaching of God’s Word on the subject of healing.

The Teaching Anointing Connection

Luke 5:17 (KJV)
17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

  • Same order in this verse as in the previous verses we have looked at, teaching, then healing.
  • But, there’s an added component in this account.
  • As Jesus was teaching…the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
  • This power is always present.
  • It’s always everywhere on the planet.
  • No matter where you go. No matter how remote the area. No matter how hostile the environment, power is always present.
  • But, it’s not always active.
  • It’s not always doing something.
  • Why? Because it’s faith which activates the power.
  • No faith, no results even though the power is present.
  • It’s faith which causes power, which is present everywhere, to go to work specifically.
  • When it does, that power drives out sicknesses and disease.
  • That healing power obliterates cancer. It sets heart conditions in order. It heals back conditions.
  • In order to get it to flow, you have to have faith.
  • In order to have faith, you have to hear the Word which generates it.
  • That’s why teaching comes first.
  • That’s why hearing is so vital.

Content and Attitude in the Realm of Hearing

Mark 4:24 (KJV)
24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.

Luke 8:18 (KJV)
18 Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.

  • In these two verses, Jesus lays out two hearing requirements.
  • If you desire to hear with a view of generating faith to receive from God then…
    • Take heed what you hear.
    • Take heed how you hear it.

What You Hear

  • If you are sick and desiring to be well, ask yourself, this question.
  • What am I hearing?
  • What’s the content? Am I hearing God’s Word or people’s words?
  • In the realm of healing, content is king.
  • One thing is for sure. If you are sick, you are hearing your body.
    • Your body is talking to you.
    • Your body is telling you something is wrong.
    • It sends the distress signal in a variety of ways, with a variety of symptoms.
  • With those symptoms barking loudly, people then go to the doctor and share with the doctor what they hear their body saying.
  • Then your doctor starts giving his/her input into your hearing. His input, his advice, his prescription, is supposed to alter what you are hearing your body say.
  • So first, you are hearing your body.
  • And now, you are hearing your doctor about your body.
  • Everything is still in the realm of hearing.
  • Then you go home and tell your loved ones or your friends and your neighbors what you are hearing your body say. And with that you repeat what you heard the doctor say about what your hearing your body say.
  • Now if you act on what the doctor told you, what is that?
  • Well that’s faith in what the doctor said, right?
  • Faith is produced by what you hear.
  • God knows that. He designed the system this way.

Romans 10:17 (KJV)
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

  • Jesus said, ‘Take heed what you hear.’
  • If you hear the words of people, you will have faith in people.
  • If you hear the Words of God, you will have faith in God.
  • Why do we have to take heed to what we hear? Why?
  • Well, what if the medical community is wrong?
    • Has the medical community in honesty ever misdiagnosed a case?
    • They are honest people.
    • They want to do the right thing.
    • But these are men we are dealing with and men are limited.
    • What if the medical community just doesn’t know?
    • What if the medical communities only available prescription causes potential problems in other areas of your body?
    • You know the whole side-effects issue of medical science. For example, our modern day method of dealing with cancer which involves killing the good cells with radiation in the hopes that we kill off the bad cancer cells at the same time. It leaves people in remission but it also leaves people a wreck.
  • Where does this leave you?
  • Is there a better solution?
  • Well sure there is.
  • If you can hear what your body is saying, if you can hear what your doctor is saying, you can hear what your God is saying.
  • You can get faith in God by listening to God.
  • You can get faith for healing by listening to God’s Word on healing.

Mark 5:25–28 (KJV)
25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, 26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. 28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

[Tweet “You can get faith for healing by listening to God’s Word on healing.”]

  • This certain women, was considered by the law as unceasingly unclean because of her unceasing flow of blood.
  • Despite that she still came to Jesus.
  • Why did she come to Jesus?
  • The scripture tells you why. She heard of Jesus.
  • What did she hear about Jesus?
  • She heard He was healing people.
  • What generated the faith this woman needed to appear in public to press through a crowd in violation of the law which said she was unclean?
  • Specifically, she heard people were being healed by touching Him.
  • So, she said, “If I can just touch His garment I will be healed.”
  • So, she came in the press endeavoring to touch His garment. You know the results. The flow was instantly stopped in her body.
  • Take heed what you hear.
  • So again, if you are sick and desiring to be well, ask yourself, this question.
  • What are you hearing? That’s content.
  • If you are in a church which teaches healing has been done away with, you are in the wrong church if you are sick.
  • Why? You are listening to the wrong content.
  • Take heed what you hear.
  • Now, if you are in a church which teaches Jesus is the healer but you are having trouble receiving, check up on the next thing Jesus said to check.
  • Check up on how you are hearing.
  • Jesus said, “Take heed what you hear and take heed how you hear it.”

How You Hear

2 Kings 5:1 (KJV)
1 Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the Lord had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper.

  • Through a series of events Naaman hears there is a prophet in Samaria who has a healing ministry (2 Kings 5:2-8).
  • Naaman finds his way to the front door of Elisha’s home.
  • Just like the woman with the issue of blood heard of Jesus healing ministry, so this Syrian commander, struck with leprosy, heard of Elisha’s healing ministry.

2 Kings 5:9–10 (KJV)
9 So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha. 10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.

  • Naaman heard the words which would provide healing for his body. What did he do with those healing words?

2 Kings 5:11–12 (KJV)
11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the Lord his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

  • Naaman became angry with the healing words of Elisha the prophet.
  • Now, thankful a servant of his spoke to him and his words changed his mind and he decided to humble himself and act on the Word of God which said ‘Dip in the Jordan seven times.’ Because he did it, he was healed. God’s power which is always present went into his body and drove the leprosy out of his body.
  • Had he remained in his prideful state, he never would have received his healing. Why? He needed to act on the Word.
  • Take heed what you hear.
  • Take heed how you hear it.
  • Content and attitude.
  • The content Naaman heard was right.
  • His attitude towards it was not.
