Who is Jesus to You?

“Who is Jesus?” is the question of the ages. As far as going to heaven is concerned, there are many things that have no bearing. It does not matter what tribe you may come from. There are only three in God’s sight anyway; Jew, Gentile and the church of God. It does not matter what your church affiliation is. You can be any flavor of church or denomination you care to be. Your social status has no bearing. Whether you are an outlaw, an outcast or a heretic to your circle is no consequence to God the Father. Your political views have no bearing on your standing with heaven. Your economic status has no influence to the God own owns everything and is the Creator of all. The only thing that matters is your answer to this question, Who is Jesus to you? God the Father wants to know; all of heaven is waiting to know, “What are you going to do with Jesus, who is called, the Christ?”

Jesus is God’s Only Begotten or Unique Son.

  • He is the second member of the triune Godhead. In His person, He is equal with God and has always existed. Jesus is not a created being like man was. He has always been God and exists with God. You may think, how complicated this is; three members of the God head and all of them are God? Though this is by far an extremely incomplete way of looking at the Godhead, you might consider thinking of them as three beings with the same last name.

Exodus 3:13–15 (KJV)
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. 15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

  • Moses asked for God’s name implying that GOD is not His name. The word ‘God’ is a descriptor of who God is in His being. God’s name is not God. God is who He is. It is the same with mankind. I am a man, a human being but my name is not ‘man’. My name is Emery. My name can be defined. It has a meaning. It means ‘work-ruler’. God has a name. In fact, He has many names and at various times in the history of things, He has chosen to share one of His names. In the Exodus account above, God revealed to Moses that His name is the Lord or YHWH (pronounced Yahweh).
  • A second way of thinking of the Godhead is that they resemble a family consisting of Father and Son, though this is a very incomplete way of looking at this. The analogy loses its force when you come to the Holy Spirit. The three members of the Godhead consist of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

John 3:16 (KJV)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

DEFINITION: begotten/μονογενής/monogenēs – the term literally means one of a kind or unique with no connotation to time, originality, or solitary existence. 1

  • Jesus, as the second member of the Godhead is a unique, one of a kind son. What makes Him special is that He possessed the attributes of deity. He was omnipresent. He was omniscient or all knowing. He was omnipotent.
  • The tremendous sacrifice of Jesus for mankind is seen in Jesus willingness to lay aside these unique ‘omni’ attributes so that He could become a man and be born into a human body via the virgin birth.

Philippians 2:5–10 (ESV)
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

  • Jesus is the Son of God but He also is known as the Son of Man. The titles together sum up His uniqueness.
  • This is the gospel message.
    • Though Jesus was God, He became a man which allowed Him to represent you and I at Calvary where God laid upon Him the sin of the whole world.
    • He was a man. He walked as a man. He was tempted as a man. He endured what men endure. He was a faithful and complete sacrifice for mankind. Jesus balanced the eternal books of justice making redemption an established legal fact in the universe.
