The original illustration tells of an evangelist, Michael Billester, returning to a Polish village in 1940. When he invited the congregation to recite verses from their shared Bible, one listener asked whether he meant chapters. Some villagers had learned whole books by heart. The community’s well-worn copy had passed from household to household.
