Podcast Notes:
- Well, again welcome.
- Let’s pray.
Father God, thank for Jesus, the Light of Life. We thank you for granting to us a spirit of wisdom and revelation. Help us to see and know your Word so that we can act on it for the entrance of your Word brings light. We thank for these things ahead of time in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
God Is Light in His Essential Being
1 John 1:5 (NASB 2020) — 5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
- God is light is not poetic language.
- Neither is this statement the theoretical musings of an uninformed mind.
- God is not a dictionary entry called light—He is living Light.
- God doesn’t possess light — He is light in His essential being.
- Forget the poetry.
- Light is the very essence of what God is.
- And with that thought, here is the Illustration of the Day.
Illustration of the Day — The Sun Does Not Try to Shine
- The sun does not wake up every morning and decide whether or not it will emit light.
- It does not struggle to shine.
- It does not work to produce brightness.
- Light proceeds from the very nature of what the sun is.
- If the sun ceased to give light, it would cease to be the sun as we know it.
- Light is part of its constitution.
- John does not say God knows light.
- John does not say God likes light.
- John does not say God prefers light.
1 John 1:5 (NASB 2020) — “God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.”
- Light is not something external to God.
- It is His being.
- Holiness shines from God because holiness is what He is.
- Truth emanates from God because lies cannot exist within Him.
- Righteousness radiates from Him because corruption has no place in His nature.
- God is light and in Him there is no darkness AT ALL.
- God never ‘moves toward’ purity because, in His essential nature, HE IS PURE.
- He never “leans toward” truth because HE IS THE TRUTH.
- Nothing false, evil, corrupt, or impure exists in God.
- Darkness is utterly foreign to His nature.
- Here’s the truth: The moon borrows light—The sun shines from within itself.
- Do you understand?
- The sun is not lit up by another source.
- The sun does not borrow its light.
- The sun shines on its own because that is what the sun is.
- And that’s what God is all by Himself—LIGHT.
- Everything else needs to receive light.
- God simply IS self-existent, self-revealing, uncreated Light.
- And with that thought, here is the Definition of the Day.
- The Greek word for light used here in First John 1:5 is the word that derives its roots from the words “to shine” or “to burn.”
1 Timothy 6:15–16 (NASB 2020) — 15 which He will bring about at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.
- To understand the magnitude of God is light understand what the word ‘unapproachable’ means.
- The Greek word ‘unapproachable’ describes something that is incapable of being penetrated or reached.
- The light of God’s being is so intense that He must veil Himself to protect the very people He desires to dwell among.
Exodus 33:20 (CSB) — 20 But he added, “You cannot see my face, for humans cannot see me and live.”
- So we are talking an overwhelming radiance that pours out of His essential being.
- No living being can endure such light.
The Day Borrowed Light Ends
- Now, there is coming a day when men, created in the image of God, will more fully understand the words ‘God is light.’
- Think about Genesis 1 for a moment.
- God, who is Light, said, “Let there be light.”
- The God who is eternal Light created light itself.
- Light entered creation because the God who IS Light spoke.
- The sun had not yet been made.
- The moon had not yet been formed.
- Yet light existed because God spoke.
- Light entered creation because Light Himself had spoken.
- After this, God made a greater light and lesser light — the sun and the moon.
- He created the stars also.
- That’s an entire universe of lights.
- The God who IS Light filled creation with lights as a display of the exceeding greatness of His power.
- So now we have solar systems that are characterized by light.
- The sun shines, the moon reflects, and the stars flood the heavens with light.
- The Book of Genesis and the Book of Revelation are bookends for humankind.
- Genesis is the starting line—Revelation is the finish.
- Keep that in mind as you read Revelation 21.
Revelation 21:10, 22–25 (NASB 2020) — 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God. Her brilliance was like a very valuable stone, like a stone of crystal-clear jasper. 22 I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. 25 In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed;
- Did you understand what you are reading?
- The light that emanates from God is so intensely powerful that the sun and the moon will be retired from their duties.
- There is coming a day when there will be no more use for them.
- The sun and the moon served it’s purpose.
- Which was what?
- Because of His perfect knowledge, God knew in advance that humanity would sin and that there would have to be a way to get man back to God.
- The Bible calls that redemption and it was deliberately woven into creation long before you were a twinkle in your mother’s eye.
- On the fourth day of Creation, God called the sun, moon, and stars into being to become a witness.
- A witness that God is the Creator.
Romans 1:18–20 (NASB 2020) — 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
- Every light in Creation points beyond itself to the coming unveiled radiance of God’s face.
- Light is your destiny—darkness is your doom.
- The sun, moon, and stars are mere temporary spectators to the glory of God.
- You see, Creation’s lights were never meant to be the ultimate.
- These lights point beyond themselves to a city where all the saints of God shall live.
- A city that is powered by God who is light.
- So when you look at the sun, moon, and stars understand what you are looking at and why they are there.
Revelation 22:1–5 (NASB 2020) — 1 And he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb, 2 in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him; 4 they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. 5 And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illuminate them; and they will reign forever and ever.
- This is the finish line—your finish line.
- Now, how do we get from here to there?
The Difference Is Jesus
- To start understand that we have two Bible verses that seem to say the opposite of each other.
Exodus 33:20 (NASB 2020) — 20 He further said, “You cannot see My face, for mankind shall not see Me and live!”
- And…
Revelation 22:4 (NASB 2020) — 4 they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.
- What’s the difference between you can’t see God’s face and live in Exodus and they will see face in Revelation and be just fine?
- The difference is Jesus—He came between these two points.
- And here is how he changed everything.
- Jesus lived a perfect life sustained by perfect obedience.
- Because of this, He became the perfect sacrifice for man.
- Do you understand that Calvary would have meant nothing IF Jesus hadn’t lived a perfect life.
- You see the sacrifice for sin had to be a perfect sacrifice.
- The Lamb of God offered for the sins of man had to be completely pure.
- Pure means—no sin—no deceit—not even a hint of disobedience.
- Think about the challenges of living a perfect life.
- Have you ever missed God’s will? Jesus didn’t.
- Have you ever gotten over into pride? Jesus didn’t.
- His love walk was perfect—not even a millimeter of ill feeling toward anyone His whole life.
- Think about the kind of life perfect obedience required.
- By this life, Jesus paved the way for God to recreate your spirit man by the new birth.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NASB 2020) — 17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
- God made salvation for man as simple as possible—only believe.
- Light is your destiny—darkness is your doom.
- With a simple YES to the Lordship of Jesus, the born-again spirit man begins moving toward what was impossible in Exodus: seeing God’s face.
- But, we are not there yet.
- So, what’s the next step?
2 Corinthians 5:1–5 (NASB 2020) — 1 For we know that if our earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For indeed, in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, 3 since in fact after putting it on, we will not be found naked. 4 For indeed, we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave us the Spirit as a pledge.
- To be able to stand in the Presence of God who is total pure light requires not a recreated spirit man but also a glorified body.
- A glorified body can endure seeing the Glorified Father of All Creation.
- What that means is that your best days are yet ahead.
- We will see God’s face.
Living As Sons of Light
John 12:35–36 (NASB 2020) — 35 So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and hid Himself from them.
- God is light and since you are His child, you are a son of light.
- Embrace your identity.
- God is light—in Him is no darkness at all.
1 John 2:6 (AMP) — Whoever says he abides in Him ought [as a personal debt] to walk and conduct himself in the same way in which He walked and conducted Himself.
- We are to walk as Jesus walked.
- First John helps us so much here.
1 John 1:7 (NASB 2020) — 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
- Sons of light are most comfortable walking in the light.
- That means we have no use for Satan’s dark realm.
- Not even a thimble’s worth of darkness has any place in us.
- Root it out. Cast it down. Throw it away.
- Walk in light. Deal in light. Stay in light.
Proverbs 6:23 (NASB 2020) — 23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And rebukes for discipline are the way of life
- That means you should have a special relationship with God’s Word.
- The commandments of God are light and life.
1 John 2:8–11 (NASB 2020) — 8 On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining. 9 The one who says that he is in the Light and yet hates his brother or sister is in the darkness until now. 10 The one who loves his brother and sister remains in the Light, and there is nothing in him to cause stumbling. 11 But the one who hates his brother or sister is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
- Walking in love is walking in God’s greatest commandment.
- There should be no ill-will toward any member of the human race.
- Forgive—forget—move ahead.
- How do you know that you have forgiven is a question that often arises.
- The individual who walks in love refuses to magnify the failures of others and looks for the best rather than the worst.
- Stop rehearsing the failures of others.
- The individual who walks in love always talks of people in a positive light, emphasizing the best in people rather than the worst.
Philippians 4:8 (NASB 2020) — 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
- Cast down dark thoughts about people.
- Every person is made in the image of God—and God is light. That means human beings were created for truth, purity, love, and fellowship with Him.
- Replace dark thoughts then with light thoughts.
- Whatever is both true and pure and lovely about people is what should come from your lips.
- If a person did you wrong, forgive and find something lovely to say about them.
- Never allow wrong thoughts about others to build a barricade in your mind.
- Speak well of people.
- Start at home.
- Say good things about your children and to your children.
- Practice walking in love.
James 2:8–9 (NASB 2020) — 8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the Law as violators.
- The choice is love or darkness at every step.
- Light is your destiny—darkness is your doom.
- You understand that darkness is the absence of light.
- Here is something fascinating about real physical light.
- Scientists can combine beams of light.
- You can take red light, blue light, and green light and combine them together.
- The more pure light you add together, the brighter it becomes.
- Eventually it moves toward white light.
- But here is the important part:
- You cannot add darkness to light.
- Darkness is not an actual substance that gets injected into light.
- Darkness is simply the absence of light.
- Light is so much greater than darkness.
- It’s not even close.
- If you walk into a completely dark room carrying a flashlight, the darkness does not jump onto the flashlight and contaminate it.
- The flashlight does not become “a little dark.”
- The light remains fully light.
- Instead, the darkness immediately retreats wherever the light shines.
- That’s how puny the realm of darkness is.
- Just like darkness cannot contaminate pure light, sin cannot contaminate God’s nature.
- Darkness cannot spread into Him.
- Evil cannot stain Him.
- Corruption cannot enter Him.
- He is absolute purity, absolute truth, and absolute holiness.
James 1:17 (NASB 2020) — “…with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.”
- And this is why Jesus changes lives.
- When the light of God enters a human heart, darkness must go.
- Confusion must exit.
- Bondages loosen.
- Sin gets exposed.
- Direction starts becoming visible.
- Light does it all.
Beholding the Light
- Practice today looking at our God.
- Never forget it: Light is your destiny—darkness is your doom.
2 Corinthians 3:17–18 (NASB 2020) — 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 But we all, with unveiled faces, looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
- As you look at the light of God—you will be transformed into the same image.
- You may not even sense the change immediately—if you don’t keep looking.
- If we continue [what an important word] to look at the glory of the Lord, we will be changed from one level of glory to the next.
- We are sons of light, learning to walk in light, being transformed by the light.
- What a marvelous life, this Jesus life is.
- So, the question is not whether darkness exists in this world.
- The question is: what are you going to walk in?
- God is light, and through Jesus Christ you have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light.
- That means your life should increasingly reflect the nature of the God you belong to.
- Sons of light think differently, speak differently, forgive differently, and live differently.
- They do not rehearse bitterness.
- They do not nourish hidden darkness.
- They do not grow comfortable with compromise.
- Sons of light walk in truth, purity, love, and fellowship with God.
- So make it practical.
- Spend time daily looking at the glory of God through His Word.
- Fill your mind with things that are true, honorable, pure, and lovely.
- Refuse dark thinking.
- Speak life over people instead of tearing them down.
- Forgive quickly.
- Stay tender toward the Holy Spirit.
- And when darkness tries to creep into your thought life, relationships, or habits—deal with it immediately.
- Root it out. Cast it down. Throw it away.
- Remember who you are.
- You are not called to live in darkness.
- Light is your destiny—darkness is your doom.
- Maybe today you realize you have never truly come into the light of Jesus Christ.
- Outside of Jesus Christ, mankind remains separated from the light of God and under the dominion of darkness.
- The good news is this:
- Jesus Christ came to bring you out of darkness and into the light of God.
- He lived a perfect life, died on the Cross for your sins, and rose again so you could be forgiven, recreated, and brought back into fellowship with God.
- Salvation is not earned by your human effort.
- It begins with surrender.
- It begins with a simple yes to Jesus Christ as Lord.
- If you are ready to give your life to Him, pray this from your heart:
“Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. Thank you for forgiving me. Now make me new. Bring me out of darkness and into Your marvelous light. I surrender my life to You right now. And I say with my mouth—Jesus Christ is my Lord. Thank you for receiving me.
- If you prayed that prayer and meant it, welcome to the family of God.
- Drop us a line and let us know about your decision so that we can rejoice together with you.
- Welcome to the Kingdom of Light.
- And now the journey of growth begins.
- Keep learning the Word of God.
