Why Jesus Is Lord Means He Is the Boss

Why Jesus Is Lord Means He Is the Boss

What does the phrase ‘Jesus is Lord’ mean? More importantly, what does it mean to you? It’s a question every believer must know since it’s what one must confess to get into God’s family. So many think ‘coming to Jesus’ is a visit to the altar with a prayer recital to God for forgiveness. They don’t realize that Jesus coming into a person’s life as Lord means they have a new boss. The boss is the one who makes the call. It’s what happens in your job when you are at work. The boss gives the direction. He sets the vision for the day. Experiencing new life in Jesus means having a new boss. It means having a new vision. Jesus calls the shots. That’s the focus of today’s post: Why Jesus is Is Lord Means He is the Boss.

Jesus as Lord Means the Word of God is Boss

  • People love the idea of having control.
  • We enjoy the ability to ‘call the shots’.
  • It’s one of the tough things you may experience as you get to the end of your life.
  • Sometimes you have to give up control.
  • Extreme age requires that others step in and dictate your agenda.
  • What does it feel like for a loved one to say to you, ‘Because of your extreme age, it’s not safe for you to drive anymore?’
  • And then, reinforcing that statement by taking your keys.
  • It stinks giving up control.
  • But, giving up your independence is what you have to do when you come to Jesus.
  • You must give up control.
  • Jesus spoke these words in the Sermon on the Mount.

Luke 6:46 (KJV) — 46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

  • He followed these words with the story of two people; one who built his house on a robust rock-like foundation.
  • And, a second one who went ahead and built a house with no regard for the foundation.
  • In one swift and simple sentence Jesus told us what it means to have Him as Lord.
  • Jesus as Lord means the Word of God is boss.
  • To be successful in the Christian experience, understanding what the Bible is for, is a must.
  • The Bible is God speaking to me.
  • It is Jesus speaking to you.
  • Until you believe that the God who sits in heaven commissioned a book so that we could live life on earth and find our way to heaven, you will never do very much with this book.
  • Hunger to know God and His word is one of the first things you will notice after you say yes to Jesus.
  • It was for me.

My Testimony

  • I gave my heart to Jesus in July of 1976.
  • A gentleman shared his extraordinary account of how he met Jesus.
  • At the end of his conversation with me, the Presence of God hit me in the top of my head and sent chills down the back of my spine.
  • I knew God was real and I wanted to know all about Him.
  • That hunger was so intense, it drove me to a mall bookstore where I purchased ‘the Bible as History’ the very next day.
  • Forty-two years later, I am still hungry to know Him.
  • The hunger has never left.
  • This unsatisfied state should be where you are.
  • Hungry to know God.
  • Are you in that place?
  • You should be.

1 Peter 2:2 (ESV) — 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—

  • The words ‘long for’ mean to desire powerfully or persistently.
  • Do you desire to know God this way?
  • Do you hunger to obey His voice, and to follow the gentle leading of His Spirit?
  • If not, if you’ve lost your hunger along the way, it’ simple to get it back.
  • Ask the Lord to turn up the fire of God in your heart.
  • This ‘turn up the heat prayer’ is one that He has answered without fail in my life: without exception, every single time.
  • Praying this communicates to God that you are serious about Jesus as your Lord.
  • What else does Jesus as Lord mean?

Jesus as Lord Means the Holy Spirit is Boss

  • At several points, Jesus told His disciples that He was moving away.

John 13:36 (ESV) — 36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.”

  • The disciples didn’t want to hear that at all.
  • They had their eyes focused on the restoring of Israel to power.
  • The twelve wanted to get out from under this Roman domination junk.
  • They elected Jesus as their ticket to the new Kingdom of God.
  • The disciples fancied Him as the King of the new order.
  • That’s all they wanted to hear.
  • They closed their ears to everything else.
  • During these moments ‘Jesus as Lord’ was foreign to their thinking.
  • In spite of their mixed-up desires, Jesus went on to share the plan of God.

The Spirit of Truth Communicates the Plan

John 14:15–19, 21 (ESV) — 15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live… 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

  • The plan of God now includes the Holy Spirit, our revealer of truth.
  • He lives in us and communicates to us the plan of God.
  • Again, notice, loving God means obeying God.
  • You see that in verse fifteen.
  • There is no substitute for taking Jesus as boss.
  • We have to obey Him.
  • And now, the Holy Spirit is here to help us on planet earth.

Romans 8:26–27 (ESV) — 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
