#S4-052: Why Jesus Referred to the End of the World As Corpses and Vultures [Podcast]

The End Times Series

Revelation Details the Ned of the World

What do these dates have in common (1248, 1306, 1689, 1792, 1836, 1844, 1914, 1936, 1960, 1974, 1981, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1994, 2011)? They all represent the times at which people predicted that the Second Coming of Christ would occur. No one, not even Jesus knows the exact time of Christ’s coming (Matthew 24:36). What we do know is this: Christ’s coming will be unexpected and dramatic. “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10).1. In this podcast, we continue our series on End-Times by looking further at Jesus answer to the question, ‘What shall be the sign of your coming and of the end of the world.”

Podcast Notes

Question Two – ‘What Shall Be The Sign of Your Coming?’

  • Again let’s reiterate the three questions the disciples asked about End-Times. Matthew 24:1–3 (ESV) — 1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. 2 But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” 3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
  • The questions are as follows:
    • When shall these things be? (referring to the temple destruction)
    • What shall be the sign of thy coming? (referring to the Second Coming)
    • What shall be the sign of the end of the world?

Review

  • Last week, we looked at THE sign of the Jesus Coming.

Matthew 24:27 (ESV) — 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

  • This is THE sign of the Coming of the Conquering King, His appearing, in the heavens, is like huge lightning type global flashes of light.
  • Actual lightning in connection with God’s appearances is documented in scripture.

Corpses and Vultures

  • Let’s continue on now with verse twenty-eight.

Matthew 24:28–30 (ESV) 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. 29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

  • What did Jesus mean when He used the metaphor, ‘wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will be gathered?’
  • You must remember that these verses describe the Second Coming meaning that at this point the carnage of the Tribulation has already taken place.
  • The world has experienced the angels unleashing of the Seven’s on planet earth.
    • Seven seals
    • Seven trumpets
    • Seven bowls

Tribulation Judgments: The Seven Seals

The First Seal

Revelation 6:1–2 (ESV) — 1 Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.

  • The first seal introduces the arrival of the Antichrist, the man of sin.
  • A horrible demon possessed by Satan himself man of sin.
  • Remember that angels, good or bad, are not omnipresent.
  • If you want to know where Satan is physically on the planet during this time period, look no further than the address of the Antichrist.

The Second Seal

Revelation 6:3–4 (ESV) — 3 When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” 4 And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.

  • The second seal ushers in great warfare on planet earth: that’s Revelation 6:3–4.
  • One of the signs of End-Times is wars and rumors of wars.
  • As we described before, these are smaller waves, a prelude of what is to come.
  • This second seal unleashes a bigger wave of wars.

The Third Seal

Revelation 6:5–6 (ESV) — 5 When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!”

  • The third seal is a black horse rider who brings famine.
  • Again, famines in divers places is an ‘End-Time’ sign.

Matthew 24:7 (ESV) — 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

  • This seal is famine on steroids.

The Fourth Seal

Revelation 6:7–8 (ESV) — 7 When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.

  • The fourth seal unveils another rider and this one is named Death, and Hades.
    • This rider causes the deaths of one-fourth of the earth’s population.
  • One rider, one stroke of judgment, and twenty-five percent of the earth’s population is dead and on their way to an eternal hell.

The Fifth Seal

Revelation 6:9–11 (ESV) — 9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

  • The fifth seal reveals those who will be martyred for their faith in Christ during the tribulation.
    • So, more death, death on top of death.
  • Trust the Word here; this Tribulation period is no cake-walk.
  • You don’t want any part of it.

The Sixth Seal

Revelation 6:12–17 (ESV) — 12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 14 The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”

  • The sixth seal lifts the curtain on a devastating eight-hundred-pound gorilla type earthquake.
  • The scripture describes it as a ‘great’ earthquake.
  • The Greek word ‘great’ means remarkable or out of the ordinary in degree, magnitude, or effect.
  • At this point, this is the biggest earthquake the world has ever seen.
  • So all-powerful is this event, that every mountain and island is removed from its place.

The Seventh Seal

Revelation 8:1–5 (ESV) — 1 When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. 3 And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, 4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. 5 Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

  • The seventh and last seal introduces the next wave of sevens, the Trumpet judgments.
  • Along with this last seal comes peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and another earthquake”.
