More of The Real Scoop on Teaching Angels in Heavenly Host University

In this week’s podcast, we will talk about Heavenly Host University and what angels know. If you remember, we recently completed an episode on what angels are learning as they observe the Church. Angels are a fascination to all, especially when you hear stories like the following. Elizabeth Elliot told about her father’s experiences with angelic helpers: “My father, when he was a small boy, was climbing on an upper story of a house that was being built. He walked to the end of a board that was not nailed at the other end, and it slowly began to tip. He knew that he was doomed, but inexplicably the board began to tip the other way as though a hand had pushed it down again. He always wondered if it was an angel’s hand. Then there was a story about a train carrying Queen Victoria. It was a British express train. And as it raced through the night, its powerful headlamp speared the black darkness ahead. Suddenly the engineer saw a startling sight. Revealed in the engine’s headlights beam was a mysterious figure in a black cloak standing in the middle of the tracks and waving its arms. The engineer grabbed the brakes and brought the train to a grinding halt. He and his fellow train crew members climbed out to see what had stopped them. But they could find no trace of the strange figure. On a hunch, he walked a few yards further up the tracks. Suddenly he stopped and stared into the fog in horror. The bridge had been washed out in the middle and had toppled into a swollen stream. The train would have plunged into the stream if he had not heeded the ghostly figure. While the bridge and the tracks were being repaired, the crew searched more for the strange flagman. But not until they got to London did they solve the mystery. At the engine’s headlamp base, the engineer discovered a huge dead moth. He looked at it a moment, then on impulse wet its wings and pasted it to the glass of the lamp. Climbing back into his cab, he switched on the lamp and saw the “flagman” in the beam. He knew the answer now: the moth had flown into the beam, seconds before the train was due to reach the washed-out bridge. It appeared to be a phantom figure waving its arms in the fog. When Queen Victoria was told of the strange happening, she said, “I’m sure it was no accident. It was God’s way of protecting us.” 1 Once again, angels are our focus. The Real Scoop on What Angels Know about You that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Review on Teaching Angels in Heavenly Host University

Ephesians 3:1–3, 8–10 (ESV) — 1 For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— 2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly…. 8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.

  • So, if you haven’t gotten a chance to hear the first part of this short series on angels, I encourage you to go back and listen to it — here is the link.
  • If you did listen to it, you already know that the Lord set the Church, the body of Christ, as a learning institution for the angelic host.

1 Peter 1:10–12 (ESV) — 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

  • Angels have a passionate desire to stoop down and investigate your life.
  • The Greek word ‘look’ here in verse 12 means precisely that.
  • To examine, conceived of as exerting effort to see something (not in the line of sight) by bending or stooping down.
  • To get their degree, angels exert effort to stoop down and look into your life.

Hebrews 13:2 (ESV) — 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

  • Angels sometimes appear not just to help you but to learn from you.
  • Angels are student spectators viewing the great plan of redemption from the side lines2
  • But just because angels are in learning mode doesn’t mean they don’t know things.
  • Most of you may know basic arithmetic, you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide, but you don’t algebra.
  • That doesn’t mean you are devoid of math skills — you just don’t know algebra.
  • Just because angels are learning God’s grace in the believer’s life doesn’t mean they don’t know some things.
  • They know plenty of things.
  • They’ve watched and observed for thousands of years.
  • You’re bound to learn something being eternal and all.

Teaching Angels in Heavenly Host University: What Angels Know

  • So, we used the metaphor of the church as a university with believers being the professors.
  • Let’s take that symbology a little further.
  • To be accepted to a university, you must first know some things.
  • Some colleges have entrance exams that test what you know.
  • You must demonstrate a certain amount of mental ability and recall.
  • Some other universities require a certain GPA to be accepted.
  • For example, Ohio State University typically accepts and attracts “A-” average high school students. Most incoming freshmen graduated in the top quarter of their high school class.3
  • Angels are in the Heavenly Host University learning grace.
  • They’ve been accepted.
  • But, they already know some things.
  • They have already brought some things into the college experience.
  • What do angels know?
  • Here are just a few things they have learned since God created them.

Angels in Heavenly Host University Know War

  • Angels in Heavenly Host University know about war.

Revelation 12:7 (ESV) — 7 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back,

  • John Paton was a missionary in the New Hebrides Islands. One night, hostile natives surrounded the mission station, intent on burning out the Patons and killing them. During that terror-filled night, Paton and his wife prayed that God would deliver them. When daylight came, they were amazed to see their attackers leave. A year later, the chief of the tribe was converted to Christ. Remembering what had happened, Paton asked the chief what had kept him from burning down the house and killing them. The chief replied in surprise, “Who were all those men with you there?” Paton knew no men were present–but the chief said he was afraid to attack because he had seen hundreds of big men in shining garments with drawn swords circling the mission station.4
  • Here’s another reference to this thought on angels and war.

Daniel 10:8–14 (NCV) — 8 So I was left alone, watching this great vision. I lost my strength, my face turned white like a dead person, and I was helpless. 9 Then I heard the man in the vision speaking. As I listened, I fell into a deep sleep with my face on the ground. 10 Then a hand touched me and set me on my hands and knees. I was so afraid that I was shaking. 11 The man in the vision said to me, “Daniel, God loves you very much. Think carefully about the words I will speak to you, and stand up, because I have been sent to you.” When he said this, I stood up, but I was still shaking. 12 Then the man said to me, “Daniel, do not be afraid. Some time ago you decided to get understanding and to humble yourself before your God. Since that time God has listened to you, and I have come because of your prayers. 13 But the prince of Persia has been fighting against me for twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the most important angels, came to help me, because I had been left there with the king of Persia. 14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people, because the vision is about a time in the future.”

Daniel 10:20–21 (ESV) — 20 Then he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? But now I will return to fight against the prince of Persia; and when I go out, behold, the prince of Greece will come. 21 But I will tell you what is inscribed in the book of truth: there is none who contends by my side against these except Michael, your prince.

  • Angels know war.
  • They know about contending against evil angels, evil principalities, evil powers.
  • In the Bible, one archangel is mentioned explicitly in this context, Michael.

Jude 9 (ESV) — 9 But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”

  • The Greek word ‘contending’ is a compelling word choice here.
  • It is the same word in Greek for doubt or wavering.

Mark 11:23 (ESV) — 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.

  • The word doubt — ‘shall not doubt in his heart’ is the same word contending here in Jude 9.

Romans 4:20 (ESV) — 20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,

  • The word waver — ‘No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God’ is the same word contending here in Jude 9.
  • I bet you never thought about doubting as ‘contending’ with God.
  • Why is ‘doubting’ contending with God? — Because God is always right.
  • So if you disagree with Him, that’s a problem.

Amos 3:3 (The Message) — 3 Do two people walk hand in hand if they aren’t going to the same place?

  • So what place are you trying to go to?
  • You can’t get to any place in God doubting Him.
  • You can’t go to any place in God contending with Him.
  • Are you trying to go to a place called healing?
  • To get there, you are going to have to agree with Him.
  • You’re going to have to quit doubting, stop contending, accept the Word, walk in the light of the Word, and receive from Him just precisely the way he told you to do it.
  • And if you don’t do it that way, it doesn’t matter how much you pray.
  • Prayer does not make faith work — faith makes prayer work.
  • Now you may say, ‘I did believe, and I didn’t get healed.’
  • No, you did not believe; you just thought you did.
  • You disagreed with him.
  • You just thought you did.
  • Listen to this verse.

Matthew 7:8 (ESV) — 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

  • Now there is more to this.
  • All the truth that you need to know, understand, and walk in the light of is not found in one verse.
  • There are other verses you need to know.
  • So, this verse says everyone who asks receives.
  • Home in on the word, everyone.
  • And then, ask yourself the question, ‘How do you ask?’
  • If you want to know the answer to that, there’s another verse you need to know.
  • Go to James one.

James 1:6 (ESV) — 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

  • You can’t contend with Him — you can’t waver.
  • So, again, how do you ask?
  • You ask in faith, nothing doubting.
  • So, what we have here are two angels, one totally good and one totally not good, contending with one another, doubting one another’s position on the body of Moses.
  • The bad angel said it’s mine, ‘I lay claim to it’ – he wanted to make a shrine out of Moses’ body.
  • The good angel contended with that thought – he doubted that position.
  • The reverse took place; the good angel said, ‘No, this belongs to the Lord, you will not turn his body into an idolatrous happening.’
  • The bad angel contended with that thought – he doubted that position.
  • How do you know this kind of conversation between these principalities?

Jude 9 (ESV) — 9 But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses…

  • Here is how you know.
  • The Greek word ‘disputing’ means a discourse — it means to discourse v. — to consider or examine a topic in speech with others.
  • How was the matter resolved?
  • Let’s reread it.

Jude 9 (ESV) — 9 But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”

  • The contention was settled when the good said to the bad angel, ‘the Lord rebuke you.’
  • It was settled with the authority of God.
  • The bad angel was forced to back off at the Lord’s rebuke.
  • I want you to get this now. Listen to it, listen to it.
  • How was the Lord’s rebuke delivered?
  • A second party delivered it — the Angel Michael.
  • The Lord didn’t come down and say, ‘I rebuke you.’
  • He didn’t do it personally — he did it second-party style.
  • It wasn’t Michael’s authority that got the job done.
  • It wasn’t his angelic authority — he didn’t have any angelic authority — he had the Lord’s authority.

Matthew 28:18–20 (ESV) — 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

  • Now, let’s reread this but stop at the word ‘go.’
  • Now pick up with Mark 16:15.
  • Matthew said, ‘Go make disciples.’
  • Mark says, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel.’
  • Basically, Matthew tells you to make disciples.
  • Mark tells you how to do it.

Mark 16:15–20 (ESV) — 15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” 19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.

  • So, you see, the authority in Matthew 28 ties into the ‘casting out demons and manhandling serpents, found in Mark 16.
  • You know, in the phrase ‘taking up deadly serpents,’ you have in serpents a type of the devil.
  • The authority in Matthew 28 ties into the laying hands on the sick so that they may recover.
  • The authority in Matthew 28 ties into these signs shall follow them that believe.
  • The authority in Matthew 28 ties into the laying hands on the sick so that they may recover.
  • The authority in Matthew 28 ties into the Lord worked with them.
  • How does He work – through second party – passed-on authority.
  • Angels know war.
  • So how do you put all this together when you’re trying to get to a place called healing?
  • Here’s how you get there to a place called healing.
  • You must ask in faith, nothing doubting, not wavering, not contending with the Word of God.
  • When the enemy comes to discuss with you, open up a conversation with you in your head, a dispute about your healing, you then take up the authority Jesus gave you in Matthew 28, and you rebuked the devil in Jesus’ Name.
  • And all of this is done second party.
  • Again, angels know war.
  • And what do we know about Michael, the archangel?
  • He is God’s, Warrior Angel.
  • He takes no stuff from the devil.
  • You should take no stuff from the devil.
  • Sickness is of the devil.
  • Worry is of the devil.
  • Poverty is of the devil.
  • Fear is of the devil.
  • Take no stuff from the devil – rebuke Him – use the second party authority God granted you.
  • There is a second angelic being who is thought to be in the archangel class by many scholars, though not explicitly mentioned as one, Gabriel.
  • We don’t have much time to talk about him.

Angels in Heavenly Host University Know Protection

  • what else do angels know?
  • Angels know protection.
  • We saw how Michael stood over Israel as its Protector.

Daniel 10:13 (ESV) — 13 The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia,

  • The prince of the kingdom of Persia mentioned here are demon principalities that hover over and try to influence nations.
  • This is spiritual warfare at its purest.
  • In this case, Daniel was praying about the meaning of a vision he had received.
  • God sent a messenger Angel to give Daniel the answer.
  • Through these demon principalities, Satan was trying to stop that answer from coming.
  • In steps, Michael!
  • Those who mess with Israel have Michael to contend with.

Psalm 91:11 (ESV) — 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

  • The Hebrew word ‘guard’ means to protect.
  • Angels know guard duty.
  • You know they teach our military guard duty.
  • Guard duty is not a punishment; it’s a necessity.
  • You have to be ‘on guard’ in your life.
  • Jesus said so.

Mark 13:33 (ESV) — 33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.

  • An interesting thing about this word ‘guard.’
  • The Greek word means to watch carefully.
  • Here is the same word in another context.

Mark 4:24 (ESV) — 24 And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.

  • You see the words’ pay attention’ here?
  • It’s the same Greek word for ‘be on guard.’
  • So, you can say Mark 4:24, this way — ‘Guard what you hear.’
  • So here’s another reason why people don’t receive their healing.
  • They let the Word slip away from them.
  • They don’t guard or pay attention to what they have heard.

Proverbs 4:20–24 (ESV) — 20 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. 23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. 24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.

  • They let the Word escape — they let it out of their sight.
  • If you need healing, you need to be feeding on healing scriptures.
  • You don’t need to let them out of your sight.
  • There is a whole list of healing scriptures up on the website.
  • Do and read them – go print them out.
  • Get a hold of Brother Hagins CD on healing scriptures if you can.
  • He reads every one of them – you can listen to the Word – that’s ‘not letting the Word escape from your sight — that’s guard the Word — paying attention to the Word.
  • This is why prayer alone won’t work.
  • Faith comes by hearing.
  • Faith stays strong by hearing.
  • So, angels are in the protection business.
  • They are in the bodyguard business.
  • And they are good at it.

Angels in Heavenly Host University Know How to Handle Dangerous Situations

  • How many car accidents or near-miss-type testimonies have you heard?
  • Angels know about this area.
  • Angels are ever in watch mode.
  • They don’t take naps; they watch.
  • Sharon had a vision one day — she saw into the spirit realm.
  • She was flustered that day with a long to-do list.
  • At the same time, she had all this to do; her mind was on our small children, who were playing in a small wading pool on the back porch.
  • She was stressed out – who’s watching the kids?
  • Suddenly, she saw a colossal being standing right by the pool; his head was above the gutter, he was a tall man — he’s standing with arms folded, focused, looking straight down on the children.
  • The angel was in watch mode, in protect mode, standing on guard — he was doing guard duty, and when Sharon saw that, she relaxed.
  • Angels know watching.

Angels in Heavenly Host University Know Theater

  • They know other things too – they know theater.
  • Yes, angels go to the movies.

1 Corinthians 4:9 (ESV) — 9 For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men.

  • The Greek word spectacle means a theater, where games and dramatic spectacles are exhibited and public assemblies are held.
  • Angels go to the show – you are the lead actor.
  • Always wanted to be a movie star, did you?
  • It means a public show; metaphorically, a man exhibited to be gazed at and made sport of.

Angels in Heavenly Host University Know about the Law of Moses

  • Angels know about the Law.
  • They were there when it was handed out.

Acts 7:53 (NCV) — 53 You received the law of Moses, which God gave you through his angels, but you haven’t obeyed it.”

  • The Message translation has it this way.

You had God’s Law handed to you by angels—gift-wrapped!—and you squandered it!”

  • So Angels know about these areas and many others.
  • What they don’t know about is grace.
  • What they don’t know about is the church.
  • What they need education on is Grace at this level found in Jesus.
  • Now angels have had 2000 years of grace ‘study’ – observation under their belts since this has been written.
  • So, since Jesus has not come back yet, there are still grace learning opportunities.
  • School is still in session.
  • Teachers teach — Professors profess.
  • Let’s all grow together heaven and earth.
  • You guys have a great God day in Jesus’ Name Amen and, we will see you next time for another edition of Light on Life.
