Valuable Lessons From Instructive And Inspiring Healing Testimonies

Testimony’s of God’s delivering power are both thrilling and awe inspiring to hear especially the divine healing variety. In today’s podcast, we will try to dissect one such healing testimony. It is a little different from our normal podcasts. Now, this testimony that I am getting ready to share is not the one we are going to be examining but it’s cool none the less to see our Great God at work. Tyler Clarensau, fifteen, shuffled to the altar in Park Crest Assembly of God in Springfield, Missouri, to ask for healing. The surgery he’d had to correct his malformed knee joints had left him with swelling and terrible pain. Forty Pentecostal teenagers formed a circle around Clarensau and began to pray. Gradually, the whole congregation joined in. Some forty-five minutes later, silence fell. Then one of the church volunteers announced that God had healed Clarensau. Clarensau shakily stood up, then did deep knee bends—something he hadn’t accomplished in years. Today Clarensau can walk—even run. “I’d heard about people getting healed,” he says. “I thought it was pretty cool. But I didn’t know for sure about such healing until it happened to me.”1 Healing can happen to you. You can receive God’s restoring touch from heaven as well as learn from others who have already experienced God in this way. Valuable Lessons From Instructive And Inspiring Healing Testimonies, that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Prayer

  • Well again, welcome.
  • Let’s pray.

Father God, thank you for your goodness and your mercies. Your healing mercies are new and fresh everyday. Open our eyes to see the wonders of your person as the Word of God declares it. I thank for it in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Healing Testimony Lessons: Healing Scriptures

Acts 10:38 (ESV) — 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

1 Peter 2:24 (ESV) — 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

  • There are so many great Bible verses on the subject of healing.
  • In fact, we have a list of Healing Scriptures on the website.
  • You can click on the link in the podcast notes and get immediate access.
  • I encourage you to do it.
  • Make these verses a part of your life.
  • You will need them at some point.

Healing Testimony Lessons: Learning from the Past

  • Now, the Bible is a book that contains historical information.
  • It’s vital to learn the lessons that are stored away in history of God’s dealings with people.
  • There is an old Russian proverb that goes like this and with that thought, here is the Quote of the Day.
  • Here’s the quote.

Dwell in the past and you’ll lose an eye. Forget the past and you’ll lose both eyes.2

  • The Word of God points us to the reason certain episodes were picked to be recorded in the Bible.

Romans 15:4 (ESV) — 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

  • There’s that word ‘endurance’ again that we studied last month — hypomonē.
  • The Greek word we want to understand today is the word ‘instruction.’
  • This word means to teach or to learn.
  • We are supposed to learn from the past — ‘whatever was written in former days’ — that’s the past.
  • Of course, the reference here is to the Old Testament.
  • If you’re not reading the Old Testament, you’re missing out on some super valuable lessons.
  • The Lord had these lessons put in the Bible for your education.

1 Corinthians 10:1–6 (ESV) — 1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.

  • Paul, a Jewish man, is talking about his ancestry.
  • He’s talking about ‘our father’s.’

‘our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, [our fathers] were all baptized into Moses in the cloud talking about the Shekinah glory of God] and [these same fathers were baptized] in the sea [speaking of the Exodus and the splitting of the Red Sea], 3 and all ate the same spiritual food [speaking of the manna, the bread of God that He rained down from heaven], 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink [referring to the two times that the Israelites drank water from the rock: once at Rephidim (Exodus 17:6), and once at Kadesh (Numbers 20:11)].3

  • So, these descendants of Abraham experienced God’s power tremendously and God has so happy to bless them.
  • Yet, God was displeased because He couldn’t continuw to bless them because they fell into unbelief in the wilderness.
  • The Lord doesn’t want any of His children to be overthrown.
  • What earthly parent would desire for their child to be trampled?
  • The answer is none and your Heavenly Father is no different — He doesn’t want that for you either.
  • So, what did God do?
  • He had these terrible moments which occurred in the past written for you so that you might not make the same mistake as they did.
  • Well, you may say, ‘I thought we were living in the Age of Grace?’
  • We are.
  • But, unbelief doesn’t work.
  • Unbelief is no good in any dispensation of God.
  • Now, I say unbelief but do you understand what that word is all about?
  • Unbelief is a lack of trust.
  • A lack of trust doesn’t work in any Dispensation.
  • Unbelief is an unwillingness to step out even though you know that God is there to see you through.
  • With that thought, here is the Illustration of the Day.

A Georgia farmer, ragged and barefooted, was standing on the steps of his tumbledown shack. A stranger stopped for a drink of water. “How is your cotton coming along?” he asked. “Ain’t got none,” replied the farmer. “Did you plant any?” asked the stranger. “Nope,” was the reply, “afraid of boll-weevils.” “Well,” continued the stranger, “how is your corn?” “Didn’t plant none,” came the answer, “ ‘fraid there weren’t gonna to be no rain.” The visitor persevered: “Well, how are your potatoes?” “Ain’t got none. Scairt of potato bugs.” “Really, what did you plant?” pressed the stranger. “Nothin’,” was the calm reply, “I jest played safe.”4

  • Don’t just play it safe — learn from the lessons of the past.

Healing Testimonies: Dr. Lilian B. Yeomans

  • Now the healing testimony we are going to dissect is from a doctor whom the Lord healed [in the past].
  • Dr. Lilian B. Yeomans is her name and she lived in the later part of the 19th century into the early part of the 20th century.
  • Before we examine this valuable healing testimony, know that I have upgraded some of the language in this testimony so we can understand it better in 21st century, where we live.
  • The links to the original testimony and some of the other places where information was gathered is in the podcast notes in case you’re interested. [They are at the bottom of this post]

Healing Testimonies: Lilian B. Yeomans, Drug Addiction

Psalm 130:1–8 (ESV) — 1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD! 2 O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! 3 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. 5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; 6 my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. 7 O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. 8 And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

  • Psalm 130 is the reference Lilian B. Yeomans used to describe her healing.
  • She was a medical doctor who became addicted to the narcotic drugs morphine and chloral.
  • This is her what happened to her.
  • According to Dr. Yeomans,

Healing Testimonies: Lesson One — Follow Jesus Closely

I had been saved for several years, but, followed Jesus afar off like Peter did. It’s a dangerous thing to follow Jesus afar off; I proved that to my own hurt.5

Of course, nothing was further from my thought than becoming a drug addict. But I was engaged in very strenuous work, practicing medicine and surgery; and in times of excessive strain from anxiety or overwork, I occasionally resorted to morphine, singly or in combination with other drugs, to steady my nerves and enable me to sleep.

  • That’s how she got addicted — she was trying to navigate work.

[Now, since I am a medical doctor, she said] I knew the awful power of the habit-inducing drug to enslave and destroy its victims and with practical demonstrations of it before my eyes every day among the most brilliant members of the medical profession (I am a graduate of the University of Michigan Department of Medicine, Ann Arbor, Michigan), I was utterly inexcusable for daring to trifle even for a moment with such a destructive agent.6

Healing Testimonies: Lesson Two — The Importance of Grace

  • What is Dr Yeomans saying here?
  • She is saying that she knew better than to take these drugs.
  • Have you ever been in this place where you knew you were doing something you shouldn’t be doing?
  • I think we can all say at one point or another that we are guilty and we can add to that acknowledgement this statement: ‘but for the grace of God, for the mercy of God, where would we be?
  • So, Dr. Yeomans was not following Jesus as closely as she should have.
  • That’s always a mistake.
  • Where are you in your walk with God?
  • It doesn’t cost to walk close to Jesus, it pays and, really, it’s in your heart to do so.
  • Let me show you that things can be in your heart that you may not even realize are there.
  • Go to Genesis four.

Genesis 4:1–5 (ESV) — 1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.

  • Cain and Abel brought offerings to God.
  • How did they know to do that?
  • We have no scriptural record that shows that the Lord told them to do this.
  • Where did this desire come from?
  • It was in their heart — that is in their being.
  • Worship is a part of who you are.
  • You see, it’s in people to worship.
  • It’s in people to come to God.
  • It’s in you to walk with God — it’s in you to walk closely with God!
  • If you haven’t been, just ask the Lord to forgive you and thank God for His grace.

Healing Testimonies: Lesson Three — It’s Faith Not Will Power

  • Continuing with her testimony, Lilian B. Yeoman’s says.

And, alas! I thought I was toying with these drugs but one day I made the startling discovery that the drug, or rather the demon power in back of the drug, was playing with me.

I became a slave to morphine, and eighteen months later, a slave also to chloral hydrate. The craving for the drug was absolutely irresistible.

  • She said.

I had to take the drug at five o’clock in the afternoon every day. If I had been in a desert, or out on the ocean, without a watch, I would have known when it was a quarter to five by my feelings, and if I didn’t take the drug, my agony was simply intolerable.

People will come to those who are addicted to morphine and say, ‘Why don’t you just stop it? Well, they might just as well have said to me, ‘Why do you not stop breathing?’ I was completely enslaved by it.

  • You see it’s faith in the power of God not will power that sets you free.
  • Now, in the testimony Lilian B. Yeomans gives the dosage that she took of morphine.
  • I will not give you the number because she uses a measure that we do not use today.
  • But, in her testimony, you are supposed to be impressed with the number that she gives — the high dosage of her addiction and that nobody was addicted like she was.
  • And she had to have it every single day at 5 PM.
  • Here are her words about how bad a state she was in.

When by tremendous exercise and willpower, I abstained from it for 24 hours my condition was absolutely pitiful.

I trembled with weakness; my whole body was bathed in cold sweat; my heart palpitated, and fluttered; my respiration was irregular; my stomach was unable to retain even so much as a drop of water; my intestines were racked with pain and tortured with persistent diarrhea; I was unable to stand erect; to articulate clearly; or even sign my own name; my thoughts were unconnected; my mind was filled with horrid images and awful forebodings. And, worst of all, my whole being was possessed with the specific irresistible indescribable craving for the drug. Anyone who has not felt it cannot imagine what this is like. Every cell of your body screams for it. I found that 5 o’clock each afternoon I had to have it. The demand for it was imperative and could not be denied. I believe I would’ve known the time by the call even if I’ve been in mid-ocean without a watch or a clock.

  • It’s not will power — it’s faith in God’s power.
  • It’s faith in God’s Word.
  • Then, using the same measure Dr. Yeoman describes the second narcotic, chloral hydrate which sounds like a sleeping aid.
  • This is what she says about this sleeping aid.

It is a powerful hypnotic, it puts people to sleep, and one never knows when going to sleep under the influence of a tremendous dose of chloral, whether or not they will wake up on this planet.

  • The combination of these was so severe on Lilian B. Yeomans body that she was described as a skeleton with a devil living inside.

Healing Testimonies: Lesson Four — It’s Faith and Prayer Not Just Prayer Alone

  • So, she tried will power — that didn’t work.
  • She prayed and cried out to God because she saw healing in the Bible but that didn’t work.
  • Why didn’t it work?
  • Because she couldn’t accept the plain truth of the Word of God.
  • No matter how much she prayed, God did not deliver her.
  • She attributed this lack of deliverance to a lack of faith in the simple statement of the Word of God.
  • When people realize something bad is happening in their body, sometimes the first thing they do is ask someone to pray for them.
  • That’s not the first thing you should do.
  • You should ask the question: what does God’s Word say about this?
  • You see, it takes faith to get an answer to prayer.
  • And faith comes from the Word of God.
  • Faith makes prayer work not the other way around.
  • Prayer does not make faith work.
  • So getting someone to pray for you is not the first move.
  • Now, this is how she got healed from this addiction.
  • Lilian B. Yeoman’s picked up her Bible and began to read the Word of God once again.
  • She had left off doing it, you see.
  • In fact, she didn’t just read it lightly this time, she devoured it.
  • As she read and poured over the Word of God, she sensed the Holy Spirit speaking to her from Jeremiah thirty.

Jeremiah 30:17 (ESV) — 17 For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the LORD, because they have called you an outcast: ‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’

  • So, now the Lord gave her a verse to stand on.
  • Taking God at His Word, Lilian began to tell her family and friends that she was delivered from narcotic addiction.
  • They all thought she was nuts.
  • At this point, she is still not healed.

Healing Testimonies: Lesson Five — The Healing Anointing Sets You Free from Addiction.

  • Some will use the word ‘delivered’ when talking about drug addiction and there is nothing wrong with that terminology.
  • Saying I’ve been delivered from drugs is a great thing to say.
  • But, I prefer to say that the person was ‘healed’ because God’s divine healing power is operational in cases like this.
  • In cases of drug addiction, the person’s physical system has to be reset.
  • That’s where the healing power comes in.
  • That’s where the healing anointing sets a person free from addiction.
  • That’s another lesson we can learn from this testimony.
  • God made the body and He can fix it and He does it with His powerful anointing.
  • So, it’s vital to understand the link between addiction and healing.
  • So, Lilian B. Yeomans goes to a healing house where they are praying for the sick and this is what she says.

Healing Testimonies: Lesson Six — Pray and Be Led by the Lord

” Well, my reason for going, was not that I had lost confidence in the ‘medical route’ but because it seemed to me, God told me very clearly that He would not deliver me from this by the medical means available.

  • She asked the Lord previously again and again under what physician’s care she might place herself.
  • That’s another great lesson you can learn — pray and be led by the Spirit of God about what you should do.
  • Do you think you should go to the doctor — pray about that.
  • Pray about which specific doctor to go see.
  • See what the Lord says about it.
  • Dr. Yeoman’s prayed about what sanitarium she might go to.
  • Sanitariums were specialized hospitals during her day.
  • She said that God never satisfactorily answered her.
  • In her words,

‘I seemed to get an absolutely negative answer.

God seemed to say plainly, ‘I am the Lord that healeth thee’ and so I came down to this place.

  • Which was John Alexander Dowies healing home.
  • That’s how the Lord led her.
  • Just like the Lord led her — He will lead you.
  • So, ask the Lord and allow Him to lead you by the Spirit of God.

Healing Testimonies: Lesson Seven — Healing Is Not Always Instantaneous

  • Now, there’s a bit more to this testimony that’s vital.
  • They called Dr. Yeoman’s sister, who was also in the medical field as a trained nurse.
  • This is what she said about her sisters situation.

Miss Yeomans: “Well, I would just like to say, speaking entirely as a trained nurse, that I have had some experience. I had a good deal of faith, but not much understanding in Divine Healing when I came. What amazed me in this case was the power of God. How wonderfully it was manifested.

  • Now, I was struck by this next set of statements.

The sister said, ‘it seemed to me as each symptom became unbearable to my patient, it was just smoothed over quietly, so that God let her have a certain amount [of these symptoms] , but just as she was able to stand it.’

  • So, she is in this healing home that the Lord led her to deciding not to use natural means but to rely on God’s power.
  • Five o’clock comes and Lilian B. Yeomans starts having the same symptoms that she had when she tried to get off the drugs by going cold-turkey — you know using will-power.

For the first twenty-four hours she had a great deal of [the same symptoms she had the 57 previous times she tried to get free] diarrhea and vomiting; her stools were nothing but blood.

  • She’s in bed totally emaciated.
  • Her sister said.

I was a little bit frightened from a professional standpoint. We should be helping Lillian. This patient should be receiving drink and some sort of stimulation, and should receive some carefully prepared nourishment in order to support her system under these trying circumstances.

  • She’s thinking ‘we need to give her something.’
  • Of course, she is thinking according to her training in the medical profession.

Healing Testimonies: Lesson Eight — Act on the Word

  • At one of her low points, and unnamed person encouraged Lilian to get up and go to church.
  • Listen to this now.
  • Believing that the exertion would kill her, Lilian decided not to go when the Holy Spirit spoke to her heart.
  • This is what the Spirit of God said to her.

“I told him to tell you to go to church. Arise.”

  • With great effort, she stepped out in faith and walked to the church service accompanied by her sister but noticed little change to her feeble condition.
  • Upon her return, from the service she began to feel better.
  • It was as if God used that simple act of faith as a catalyst for her healing. She later recalled.7

from that time, perfect victory through faith in the power of the Name of Jesus was mine.

  • Her sister who was right there with her said this.

I knew any means would be lack of faith in God, and I simply asked God to do what He thought best in the case, and just as each symptom became more than she could stand, it just leveled out. First, the diarrhea stopped. Then, the nausea stopped. Then she observed her sleeping pattern. She saw that she wasn’t tossing and turning in her sleep. The terrible restlessness of a morphine patient is something fearful.

  • Her sister went on to explain.

I cannot explain it, but just as it got too much it was stopped in answer to prayer. I asked the minister [Dr. Dowie] to pray one night especially, and this terrible restlessness stopped, and since then she has been able to sleep.

  • So, all the drug addiction signs ceased.
  • All the restlessness during sleep and the need for sleeping pills ceased.

Now, I am perfectly free from that craving for morphine. I have gained twenty-five pounds I think, and I have a ravenous appetite. I have been sleeping well for fully ten days, and I feel I am completely delivered from morphine and chloral, for which I give God the praise.

  • A doctor testified to this healing saying that he did not believe there ever has been any record of a person taking the amount of sleeping aid Dr. Yeomans was taking every twenty-four hours, and living to tell the tale. He told that audience, ‘There is not one of you here who if you had taken the dose she had took that it would have killed you outright. But our sister took it every twenty-four hours in that enormous quantity, not mixed with some other drug, but taken with pure water.
  • She was delivered because she stepped out on the simple Word of God to her — go to church.
  • Over and over again, she had throw away large quantities of drugs that cost her a small fortune trying to get free.
  • Yeoman’s tried all the substitutes for these drugs in an effort to get free.
  • Nothing worked.
  • She consulted many physicians — in her words, ‘some of national reputation’ but to no avail.
  • Though they were very kind to her, they were powerless to help her.
  • Lilian tried everything and nothing worked — nothing helped her except the Lord’s simple statement — go to church.
  • Why did that work?
  • It takes faith yes — but it also takes corresponding action.
  • Healed people go to church.
