Why This First Jesus Miracle Matters

Podcast: Light on Life Season 6 Episode 2

Why This First Miracle of Jesus Matters

Jesus miracles matter, especially His first one. Every Jesus miracle matters. Here is a modern day one. In Kissimmee, Florida, a tornado lifted Jonathan Waldick, only 18 months old, from his bed. It carried him 50 feet. It injected him into a five-foot-high clump of debris that corkscrewed itself into the splintered trunk of an oak tree. And there, after a frantic, 30-minute search, Jonathan was found, only one foot visible but wiggling with life. There he was found, still cocooned in his Perfect Sleeper mattress, still resting on his purple striped sheet. Relatives and friends call Jonathan Waldick “The Miracle Baby.” They call the event “The Miracle at 1400 Fair Oaks.” One woman, Janice Gassert said, “I think God has something planned for this boy. I believe there’s a special plan.”

A few feet away, old phonograph records sat atop the wreckage, left there by the wind. It was a recording by the Raker Evangelistic Party, a gospel group. The first song on the album was called, “Oh Lord, You’ve Been So Good To Me.”1 God does all kinds of miracles, and in today’s Light on Life Podcast, we continue to look at some of them like the very first of Jesus miracles in the Gospel of John. We are going to take a look at the turning or water into wine and why it matters.

Talking Back to the Enemy with the Prayer of Faith

Talking Back to the Enemy with the Prayer of Faith

No doubt, Your parents cautioned you as a child about the disrespect involved in talking back. But there is someone on planet earth that you should talk back to every single time. He is the enemy of your soul and the hater of all things righteous. Talk back to the enemy. Backtalk devils, demons, and evil spirits. How? You do it using the prayer of faith.

[Tweet “Sickness is an attack, an enemy attack pure and simple. Will you talk back to it?”]

Why It’s Important to Flow in Faith’s Domain

Different Kinds of Prayer

Ephesians 6:18 (NKJV) — 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.

  • Notice the words ‘all prayer’ in the front part of verse 18.
  • ‘All prayer’ means all kinds of prayer.
  • The TNIV reflects this in its translation.

Ephesians 6:18 (TNIV) — 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Prayer for Your Needs – Prayer of Faith

Jesus Curses A Fig Tree

Mark 11:12–25 (TNIV) — 12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

Jesus Humanity

  • Jesus was hungry.
  • This fact proves His humanity.
  • God on His Throne doesn’t get hungry as you or I do.
  • He doesn’t order up a veggie burger to go with His angel food cake.
  • However, in His heart, God is ‘all-kinds’ of hungry.
  • He is hungry to see people come into a knowledge of His son Jesus.
  • So a hungry Jesus, seeing this tree walks up to it.
  • Notice another piece of language that shows Jesus humanity.
  • Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit.
  • Jesus walked up to the tree to see if there was any fruit on it.
  • Didn’t He know there wasn’t any fruit on it?
  • The answer is no He didn’t.
  • That’s why He went to the fig tree to see.
  • The lesson we learn here is that Jesus walked in humanness with the Holy Spirit as His guide.
  • His dependence on the Holy Spirit is evident.
  • We read some of the accounts where Jesus showcases His perception.
  • For example, when He deals with the religious crowd.

Matthew 22:18 (NKJV) — 18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test Me, you hypocrites?

  • His perception was God-like.
  • I say God-like instead of ‘as God’ because Jesus laid aside His abilities as God per Philippines 2.
  • I say God-like because He received His ‘knowing’ from the Holy Spirit.
  • It’s a thrilling fact for you and I because it shows us what is possible.
  • We have the same Holy Spirit Jesus had.
  • The same Holy Ghost that came on Jesus can come upon you.
  • There aren’t two Holy Spirit’s, after all, only one.
  • The Spirit of God invaded the earth in Acts 2.
  • He hasn’t left.

Jesus Talks to a Tree

  • So, a hungry Jesus walks up to this fig and finds out that He is in the presence of a barren tree.
  • So He talks to it.
  • Notice, how the gospel writer puts it.
  • The ESV says, ‘He, meaning Jesus, said to it.’
  • The KJV says ‘He answered it.
  • Either way, the sterile condition of the fig tree demanded a response from Jesus.
  • The tree spoke to Him.
  • It’s rude when someone speaks not to speak back.
  • So when barrenness spoke, Jesus answered back.
  • Barrenness is one area where you can flex your prayer of faith muscles.
  • Praying the prayer of faith is your answer to a barren situation that confronts you.

Sickness Speaks

  • If you’re sick, your body is saying something to you.
  • As a child of God, it is saying more to you than “I don’t feel well.”
  • Sickness belongs to Satan’s realm.
  • It doesn’t come from God.

Acts 10:38 (NKJV) — 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

  • Sickness is an attack, an enemy attack pure and simple.
  • It’s an attack on your body to slow down your work for God.
  • It’s an attack against the Kingdom.
  • But, it’s also a barrenness attack on your rights in Christ.
  • The flu is saying something to you.
  • It’s saying, “I have a right to be in your body.”
  • “I have a right to make you miserable and steal your finances.”
  • That’s what sickness is saying.
  • It’s issuing a challenge to you, throwing down the gauntlet.
  • And, it’s saying it right to your face, “I’m not leaving so, what are YOU going to do about it?”
  • You can name any disease or the sickness.
  • They all have their distinct voice.
  • Bronchitis is saying, “You lack healing,” as you spit up green stuff.
  • “As long as I’m here, you’re going to cough and choke your head off.”
  • How are you going to answer that voice?
  • Do you have the guts to talk back to it?
  • Will you rise and answer with the prayer of faith?

Lack of Finances Speaks

2 Corinthians 9:8 (NKJV) — 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.

  • ‘All-sufficiency,’ ‘abundance for every good work,’ do you hear that?
  • Does that excite you to have what you need?
  • If it does, give voice to the prayer of faith.
  • Your adverse circumstance will not change unless you learn to talk back to lack.
  • Giving the silent treatment won’t work.
  • No, you must use your words.
  • The prayer of faith is your end of the conversation.

Jesus Uses the Fig Tree to Teach the Prayer of Faith

19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city. 20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!” 22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and do not doubt in your heart but believe that what you say will happen, it will be done for you. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

The Tale of the Dead Tree

  • So, Jesus speaks to the tree on His way to Jerusalem.
  • He then ministers in the Temple.
  • At evening, He leaves and goes back out to Bethany.
  • On the way back to Bethany He passes the same tree, He spoke to earlier.
  • Jesus and His disciples retire for the night.
  • The next morning as they go along, the disciples notice the tree.
  • Something about the tree is different, like mega different.
  • The tree which was green yesterday is no longer in that condition.
  • It is dried up.
  • Jesus then takes this opportunity to teach the disciples about praying the prayer of faith.
  • To be continued in next week’s blog.

10 Simple Secrets You Can Use When You Spend Time Talking to God

Here are some simple secrets you can use when you spend time talking to God. In Saudi Arabia, according to Arab custom, reinforced by a 1952 decree of King Abdul Aziz, every subject has the right of access to his ruler—whether the ruler is a tribal sheik, a governor, or the monarch himself—to present petitions of complaint or pleas for help. Even the poorest Saudi can approach his sovereign to plead a cause. Crown Prince Fahd, speaking about this custom said, “Anyone, anyone can come here. That gives them confidence in their government. They know they may look to us for help.” Every Christian has the right to approach an even greater monarch, the King of Kings.1 Every believer has the right to spend time talking to God.

What Is the Meaning of the Star in the Christmas Story?

Podcast: Light on Life Season Five Episode Thirteen

What Is the Real Meaning of the Star of Bethlehem in the Christmas Story?

God’s plan was thought up and set in motion before the foundations of the world (Eph. 1:4). Particular courses of events and situations, at times, align to bring into a focus a particular aspect of God’s wisdom and plan. Today, we are going to look at the birth of Jesus in this way. We are going to look at some of the events that came into view during the Christmas story and we are going to ask a rather startling question about one of those events, the appearing of the star. Here is the question: ‘What would have happened, had the Star of Bethlehem not appeared?’

Becoming The Good Man God Wants You To Be

Becoming the Good Man God Wants You to Be

It has been said that “a child is not likely to find a father in God unless he finds something of God in his father.” Recently a gentleman asked the preschool class in their Sunday school to draw a picture of God. The intent was to use them as an illustration for the Sunday sermon. Toward the end of class, the children were excited to show off their work. They came up with rainbows and men with big hands. Finally, the daughter of this man showed him her picture: a man with a suit and tie on. “I don’t know what God looks like,” she said, “so I just drew my daddy instead.” What an awesome responsibility. You can live and blossom into the good man God wants you to be. A man who is respected and who models God the Father. What are some of the Bible characteristics of a good man? That’s what we are going to take a look at in today’s blog.

Why Kindness Is a Giant Fruit of the Spirit

Why Kindness Is a Giant Fruit of the Spirit

Imagine you’re holding a cup of coffee when someone bumps into you, causing you to spill what’s in your cup. You didn’t spill the tea. Nor did you spill grape juice or soda. You spilled coffee because coffee is what was in your cup. If you’d had tea in your cup, it would have been tea that spilled out. The point is, whatever is inside your cup is what will spill out of your cup if bumped or shaken. We are each a vessel, not unlike a cup. Looking from the outside, no one can know what we “contain.” But when events of life bump up against us or shake us up, whatever is inside will likely come spilling out.

So we must ask ourselves, “What’s in my cup?” Is it love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? Or is it anger, bitterness, anxiety, impatience, mean-spiritedness, ill will, faithlessness, harshness, and lack of discipline? We might present to the world that we are full of one thing when really we are full of another. It’s easy to fake it when nothing is bumping into us or shaking us up. But bring on a little trial, a little temptation, irritation, conflict, inconvenience, etc., and what’s inside our heart of hearts will come spilling out. So, fill yourselves with the Fruits of the Spirit so that the kindness and light within you spill out onto others as a testimony of the transformative power of Christ in your life.1. In today’s post, we take aim at one of the fruits of the Spirit, kindness.

Why God’s Provision for You Is In a Place Called ‘There’

You can walk in God's Provision

In Pentecostal Evangel pastor Dale Alan Robbins writes of an occasion early in his ministry when he and his wife were barely making ends meet: When I arrived home, my wife Jerri saw the worry on my face. I had $3 in my wallet and there was one can of soup in the cupboard. After our meager supper, I quietly leafed through my Bible in the dim light. Tears streamed from my eyes. I wondered whether we were really called by God. I felt like giving up. Then I thought, What alternative do I have? Who else but God do I have to turn to? I read the verse: “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16).… Encouraged, yet still burdened, Jerri and I knelt at opposite ends of the little trailer to seek God. Into the night we prayed until sleep finally overtook us. I was awakened by a pounding at the door. From the window, I could see the brilliant orange sunrise behind the city skyline. A fresh, white blanket of snow now covered the ground. Again, the knocking came. “Who is it?” I asked. A mystery voice replied, “I’ve got something for you.” Cautiously, I opened the door. There stood a short man with a grin on his face and two brown grocery bags in his arms. He quickly shoved the bags in the doorway, then turned, and walked away. Jerri joined me. Stunned, we began to look through the bags. There were bread, meat, canned goods, and several cans of my favorite soup. They were the same items and brands we normally purchased. There was also a can of shaving cream. Who knew I had just used my last ounce of shaving cream? On the bottom of one sack was an envelope with cash. (Later I discovered it was the precise amount needed to fill our gas tank to get us to our next destination.) On that wintry Saturday morning in Syracuse, my wife and I wept in our trailer and thanked God for hearing and answering our prayer. No one on the planet knew about our need; only our Lord God Almighty. And he dispatched a little grinning man to minister to us.1 In today’s post, we talk about God’s provision and how to walk in it.

Why You Should Be Jubilantly Expecting Increase

God Is a God of Increase

Some months back, we did a blog post entitled ‘One Necessary Component You Need to Grow in God.’ In that post, based on the Epistle of Second Peter, we looked at some of the elements that make for a strong spiritual walk in God. In today’s blog we pick up, where we left off and talk about how ‘increase’ is a part of God and how it should be a part of your everyday life.

How To Have A Happy Church Life

How to Have A Happy CHurch Life

I was walking my dog this week after I got home from work. You just have to know how Kobalt is. He is always on a mission to get where he is going. And once he gets there, he has his nose to the ground. It’s just one continual sniffing party. But, on this particular day and this particular walk, Kobalt did something different. It was so out of character for him that I noticed immediately. He lifted his head to look. And look he did, for several minutes. As soon as he did that, I knew exactly what the Lord was trying to get over to me. “Emery, you’ve always got your nose to the ground. You’re always trying to get somewhere. Lift up your head and look around and enjoy what’s around you.” He didn’t say those words in my spirit, but that’s what I believe was the sense of the picture He showed me. And, he used my dog to get me that message. Just wonderful! Years ago, Joyce Myer wrote a book entitled, ‘Enjoying Where You Are on the Way to Where You Are Going’. I read the book years ago but what I remember most from that book is the title. That’s what stuck with me. We need to lift our heads and enjoy where we are. Tomorrow, we’re headed to church. Do you enjoy being in church? Do you have a happy church life? Maybe you just need to lift your head and enjoy where you are. That’s what we are going to look at in today’s blog: How to Have a Happy Church Life.

Why It’s Important to Live with Purpose Instead of the Useless

Why It's Important to Live with Purpose Instead of Engaging in the Useless

The prize for the most useless weapon of all times goes to the Russians. They invented the “dog mine.” The plan was to train the dogs to associate food with the undersides of tanks, in the hope that they would run hungrily beneath advancing Panzer divisions. Bombs were then strapped to the dogs’ backs, which endangered the dogs to the point where no insurance company would look at them. Unfortunately, the dogs’ associated food solely with Russian tanks. The plan was begun the first day of the Russian involvement in World War II…and abandoned on day two. The dogs with bombs on their backs forced an entire Soviet division to retreat.1 In this blog we are going to talk about some other useless things. Things the Spirit of God says are of no value.

Why Ignorance is Never A Good God Thing

Ignorance is Not A Good God Thing

There are a few areas where the Spirit of the Lord instructs us not to be ignorant. The old saying, ‘what you don’t know won’t hurt you is simply not true. There are certain areas that The Lord wants you to become smart in really fast. It is for your good and it’s for the establishment of the God’s Holy Kingdom.
