Why Standing on the Word Is Good Medicine

Why Standing on the Word Is Good Medicine

When thinking about the subject of ‘standing on the Word,’ the Leaning Tower of Pisa comes to mind. The Tower of Pisa in Italy is a freestanding bell tower located in Italy which took 344 years to build.  The tower weighs about 14,500 tons and it’s foundation is only ten feet deep. That’s a lot of weight for a building to have to support when it has been leaning since it was built. It began to lean in 1178, five years after it began construction. The lean was due to one side sinking into the soft ground. 1 My, a ten-foot-deep foundation for a Tower that weighs 14,500 tons? Something’s not right. And the same can be said for believers in Jesus who are trying to build high-quality lives on something other than God’s Word. In today’s post, we are going to look at ‘Why standing on the Word of God is Good Medicine.’

Why You Don’t Have to Be Sick in Light of the Bible

Standing on the Word Produces Health Good Medicine

Proverbs 4:20–23 (KJV) — 20 My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear unto my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thine heart. 22 For they are life unto those that find them, And health to all their flesh. 23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life.

  • Health to all their flesh, did you hear that?
  • The Hebrew word for ‘health’ means the healing process.
  • It means the natural process by which the body is healed.
  • Are you hearing what the Spirit of God is trying to get across to us in this passage?
  • God’s Word aids the natural healing process of the body.
  • Strong’s says the word ‘health’ means medicine.2
  • Medicine doesn’t cure.
  • It aids the natural healing process of the body.
  • The Father God says the Word is the perfect prescription to provide healing for your flesh.
  • But, standing on the Word is the ticket.
  • There is an element of God’s Word which is health to your body.
  • Standing on God’s Word will make your body well.

The Natural Healing Process of the Body

  • Your physical body has a natural healing system built right into it.
  • God put it there.
  • Every human person born on planet earth has this process in their body.
  • Natural healing is part of your genetic make-up.
  • Your cells regenerate.
  • Your immune system attacks germs and viruses and disease.
  • God created that system in your body.
  • That alone is proof of God’s intentions where healing is concerned.
  • It’s not God’s will for you to be sick.
  • God wired healing into your body right from the start.
  • God said, ’If you attend to His Word, your natural genetic healing ability will not be the only thing healing your body.
  • God’s Word itself has its own healing process in your body.
  • God’s Word is healing to your flesh.

Take the Prescription Like You Are Supposed To

  • So, here’s the question, ’How can I get the Bible to fix my physical body?
  • On the label of any medicine bottle is a prescription which gives you what you need to do in order to get that medicine to do its full duty in your body.
  • If you violate the prescription if you don’t take like it’s prescribed will it work?
  • Will the medicine do its job?
  • If the prescription says take this for 30 days or 60 days or 90 days or whatever it says, will that medicine do its work to help your body if you only take it one time?
  • So in order to aid the natural healing system in your body, which doctors are trained in, you have to follow the doctors’ orders and take your medicine like your supposed to.
  • Don’t be a difficult patient.
  • God’s Word for the spiritual system works the same way.
  • God’s Word has a prescription.
  • Wouldn’t you like to know, what it is?
  • The instructions are simple.
  • It’s easy. Things in God never weigh you down.
  • Things in God are not hard, they are always easy.
  • Jesus said, ‘My yoke is easy and my burden is light.’

Standing on the Word by Taking the Prescription

  • So here’s the prescription.
    • Attend to the Word.
    • Incline Your ear to the Word.
    • Don’t let the Word escape from your eyes.
    • Keep the Word in your heart.
  • If God’s Word is healing to your flesh, are you taking in God’s Word per the prescription?
  • Don’t be a difficult patient.
  • Take God’s Word just like He said to take it.
  • It works just like the physical.
  • Medicine won’t work unless you take it according to the prescription.
  • It won’t work if you only take it one time or if you take it sporadically.
  • If you stand on the Word and do these four things, God’s Word will become health to your flesh.

Another Way to Look at Standing on the Word

Hebrews 6:17–18 (KJV) — 17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

  • I love this passage of scripture.
  • It gives us reasons why we can stand confidently on the Word.
  • The word ‘immutability’ means to be unchangeable or subject to change.
  • The word used here is an adjective.
  • Unchangeable is a descriptor of God.
  • That’s one reason standing on the Word produces health.
  • It’s because God’s promises are not ‘wishy-washy’.
  • That’s what “unchangeable character” means.
  • You can not stand on the word of a ‘changeable one’.
  • A ‘wishy-washy’ person will let you down.

Two Unchangeable God Realities

  • There are two unchangeable God realities mentioned in Hebrews 6:17–18 which help you in standing on the Word.
  • The first is His naked Word.
  • Technically, that’s all God has to give in order to get the job done.
  • Hear what He says; believe what He says; act on what He says.
  • And when you are done hearing, believing, and acting, keep standing on the Word until it changes your reality.
  • The Lord doesn’t need to do anything else.
  • If you will simply stand on the Word, your help will come.
  • In this case, we are talking about healing.
  • But, not everyone rises to the place of standing solely on the Word.
  • Abraham was having trouble standing on the Word when the Lord promised him the Land in Genesis seventeen.
  • He could believe that God could give him a son from the womb of his barren wife but he stumbled when God told him about the land that he was to receive for his descendants.
  • In order to help Abraham, God gave him something else besides His Word.
  • He spoke to Abraham in a language that he could understand.
  • Abraham understood the utter unbreakable nature of Blood Covenants.
  • And so, God spoke to him in Blood Covenant language.
  • The Lord issued not only His Word to Abraham but a Blood Covenant oath as well.
  • By these two things, Abraham rose to a place of standing on the Word.
  • It’s the same for you and me today.
  • These two unchangeable things, God’s Word and God’s oath, are reasons why we can have strong encouragement to hope.

Call to Action:

So, we, as believers in Jesus, have before them the same two tools that were given to Abraham, His Word, and His oath. His Word says we can receive health in our bodies. His oath confirms that via the death and resurrection of Jesus because by His stripes we are healed. So, keep standing on His Word.
