#S3-016: How to Obliterate Temptation in Jesus Name [Podcast]

How to Use the Name of Jesus to Live a Miracle Life

Some people fall into temptation, but a great many make plans for disaster ahead of time. “Son,” ordered a father, “Don’t swim in that canal.” “OK, Dad,” he answered. But he came home carrying a wet bathing suit that evening. “Where have you been?” demanded the father. “Swimming in the canal,” answered the boy. “Didn’t I tell you not to swim there?” asked the father. “Yes, Sir,” answered the boy. “Why did you?” he asked. “Well, Dad,” he explained, “I had my bathing suit with me and I couldn’t resist the temptation.” “Why did you take your bathing suit with you?” he questioned. “So I’d be prepared to swim, in case I was tempted,” he replied. 1 Putting temptation in it’s place is what we are talking about in this week’s Light on Life Podcast.

Podcast Notes

Philippians 2:5–11 (NKJV)
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  • All that Jesus did in His earth walk added to the value of His Name.

Dispensational Edges and the Name

  • Let’s talk some about covenant edges and overlaps.
  • The Bible is a tale of covenants.
  • It’s a book containing covenants.
  • There’s the Noahic covenant, Abrahamic Covenant, Palestinian Covenant, the Davidic Covenant and many others.
  • You get a great clue about covenants when you open up the Bible and you see two main sections, Old Testament and New Testament.
  • The word ‘testament’ is the word ‘covenant’.
  • The end of one covenant and the start of the next do not have necessarily have clean edges.

Luke 1:13,15 (NKJV)
13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John… For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

Luke 1:41 (NKJV)
41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Luke 1:67 (NKJV)
67 Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

  • Here you have three people who, the Word of God says, were filled with the Holy Ghost.
  • In Old Testament, people weren’t filled with the Spirit.
  • The Spirit of God came upon them.

Judges 3:9–10 (KJV)
9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.

Judges 11:29 (KJV)
29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

Judges 14:6 (KJV)
6 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

1 Samuel 11:6 (KJV)
6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

2 Chronicles 15:1 (KJV)
1 And the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded:

  • There’s a difference between the Spirit within and the Spirit upon.
  • How could they be filled with the Holy Ghost, or have the Spirit within if they weren’t born again?
  • There is overlap between the Old Covenant and the New.
  • There are some New Covenant happenings right at the edge of the Old.
  • It is not a guillotine-sharp edge between the two.
  • What we see in the overlap is a foretaste of what is to come.
  • We see overlap in being filled with the Spirit.
  • There’s overlap concerning the Name.
  • Do you remember when the Lord sent out the disciples two by two (Luke 10:1)?
  • Note their testimony when they returned from ministering.

Luke 10:17 (NKJV)
17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”

  • Jesus hadn’t inherited the Name yet.
  • He hadn’t gone to Calvary and died yet.
  • He hadn’t been raised up.
  • Yet, the Name worked.
  • They healed the sick and they cast out devils in the Name.
  • So, the disciples got a taste of the power of the Name before His Name was fully vested.
  • So, if the Name worked before it was fully charged, so to speak, what about now that Jesus has been lifted up far above all principality, power, might, and dominion and ever name that is named?

In His Life, Jesus Destroyed the Works of the Devil

1 John 3:8 (NKJV)

8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

  • Jesus Name has power because, in His life and with His life, he destroyed the works of Satan.
  • Notice the word ‘works’.
  • You resist the devil by resisting his works.
  • If you are waiting for the guy in the red suit and pitchfork to show up before you start using the Name, you’ll be waiting a long time and be thoroughly defeated all the while you wait.
  • What does destroy mean?
  • The Greek word destroy means to do away with, destroy, bring to an end, abolish. 2
  • Jesus abolished and brought to an end the works of the enemy.

Jesus Conquered Satan by Conquering Temptation in the Wilderness

Luke 4:1–13 (KJV)
1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. 3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: 10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: 11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

  • In this incident, Satan tempted Jesus three times in three different ways.
  • Jesus defeated Satan’s ‘temptation’ attempt in each case.
  • Satan’s defeat is rolled up into the Name.
  • That is you can defeat Satan with the Name when he tries to tempt you.
  • When he tries to tempt you, stick the Name out and what you are saying to Satan is this.
  • ‘The Name is the person. Jesus defeated you already in the area of temptation. Get out of here Satan.’

Three Areas of Temptation

  • What does the word ‘tempted’ mean?
  • It means to entice to improper behavior. 3
  • In the wilderness, Satan tried to get Jesus to do something improper in three different areas.
  • Any temptation any man has ever experienced falls into one of these three areas.

1 John 2:16–17 (NKJV)
16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

  1. The lust of the flesh.
  2. The lust of the eyes.
  3. The pride of life.

Lust of the Flesh: Turn Theses Stones into Bread

  • Satan appealed to Jesus in each of these areas in the wilderness encounter.
  • The ‘turn the stones into bread’ temptation was Satan’s attempt at tempting Jesus to do something improper via the lust or the strong desire of the flesh.
  • Jesus was hungry. He hadn’t eaten in forty days.
  • Jesus was always under control.
  • How’s that for a goal to shoot at?
  • You’re deceiving yourself, if you say, “I can’t control myself.’
  • But, it’s not only that Jesus operated in self-control.
  • It’s also that He refused to do anything just because Satan prompted him to do it.
  • But, it’s even more than that.
  • Notice Satan’s words, ‘If you are the Son of God…’.
  • What is turning stones into bread?
  • Isn’t it working of miracles?
  • And doesn’t working miracles come in conjunction with the Spirit of God?
  • As a man, Jesus couldn’t order stones to be made into bread any more than you can.
  • So, where is the temptation?
  • The Spirit of God is not going to accommodate the enemy.
  • Read the verse again, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones…”
  • If you are the Son God,… if you are the Son of God.
  • What’s Satan trying to get Jesus to do?
  • Jesus laid aside His divine power and glory.
  • He made Himself of no reputation the King James says.
  • In the Greek, ‘made himself of no reputation’ is one word and it means to empty or to make void of contents.’
  • What did Jesus empty Himself of?
  • His divine attributes as God.
  • That means, Jesus in His earth walk no longer had the big three.
    • He was no longer omniscient.
    • He was no longer omnipotent.
    • He was no longer omnipresent.
  • You have read the Philippian’s account of how Jesus emptied Himself.
  • What is Satan trying to get Jesus to do in this first temptation?
  • Satan is trying to get Jesus to pick-up what He laid down.
  • Pick-up His mighty power and glory and do this miracle as God instead of a man anointed by God.
  • ‘Get out of your lane Jesus’, the enemy is saying.
  • ‘Get out of your calling’, Jesus.
  • ‘Turn these stones to bread, Jesus.’
  • ‘You are the Son of God, Jesus.’
  • ‘You create the earth.’
  • ‘You created every stone on the earth.’
  • ‘This is no big deal for you.’
  • Jesus refused.
  • He stayed with His mission and calling.
  • He refused to alter the plan of God.
  • He refused to go back to the way things were.
  • This victory is rolled unto His Name.
  • And so, when Satan tries to tempt to you in a similar fashion to get out of your lane, to go back to what you have laid down for the Kingdom of God, you can say ‘Satan, Jesus already defeated you in this area. In the Name of Jesus go from me.

The Lust of the Eyes: All These Things I Will Give You

  • The ‘all these things I will give You in exchange for worship’ temptation in the wilderness is in the lust of the eyes category.
  • Satan legitimately offered Jesus the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
  • Why was this a genuine pull on Jesus?
  • Because the authority Satan was referencing was the authority Adam gave away to Satan in the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 1:26 (ESV)
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

  • The Hebrew word ‘dominion’ is a verb and it means to rule, to exercise authority over, as of nations or other entities, even natural ones (like animals).
  • Satan said this authority, Adam’s God given authority, was delivered to him and he could give it to whomever he wanted to give it to.
  • If something belongs to you, you can do whatever you want to with it.
  • It belonged first to God, who gave it to Adam, who gave it to Satan.
  • Now, Satan wants to give it to Jesus.
  • Jesus didn’t dispute Satan’s words.
  • He didn’t say Satan lied about his offer, even though he is a liar.
  • Jesus was tempted by this offer because it’s what He came for in the first place.
  • Jesus came to restore the authority of Genesis 1:26.
  • He came to restore man’s dominion.
  • And, He did restore it.

Matthew 28:18–19 (KJV)
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

  • This power, this authority, mentioned in Matthew 28:18, is what Satan wanted to give to Jesus.
  • But, Jesus knew, and you should know, there are right ways and wrong ways to get things.
  • The deal Satan offered him was the wrong way.
  • It was an improper way.
  • It was the easier way.
  • It was the ‘no death on the cross’ way.
  • Many times, the quick way or the fast way to something is the wrong way.
  • The right way is the way of patience.
  • Faith and patience inherits the promise.
  • God’s way is the way of calmness, composure, self-control, restraint, endurance, long-suffering, submission, persistence, perseverance, diligence, doggedness, and tenacity.
  • Satan’s way is opposite.
  • It’s the way of unrest, distraction, lack of self-control, impatience, intolerance, annoyance, irritation, anger, rage, fury, indignation, and discontent.
  • Jesus knew Satan’s offer was inappropriate.
  • He passed it by.
  • He got authority back the right way.
  • He went to the cross and defeated the enemy.
  • He legally took back Satan’s authority over planet earth.
  • And, Jesus turned around and said to His disciples and He is saying to you, ‘I have the authority.’
  • ‘I got it back.’
  • ‘It’s wrapped up in my Name.’
  • ‘Now you go and take the Name which has all authority and use it.’

The Pride of Life: Cast Yourself Down

  • The third and final temptation, in this encounter, is the ‘cast yourself down from the pinnacle of the temple so the angels can catch.
  • This temptation falls into the ‘pride of life’ part of 1 John 2:16-17.
  • The temptation begins again, the second time, with the words, ‘If you are the Son of God.’
  • Satan goes back to this again.
  • But, he repackages this temptation under the pride of life.
  • How was this temptation an attempt at provoking pride to arise in Jesus life?
  • The highest point of the Temple would have the greatest view.
  • A supernatural deliverance in plain view of the multitude would have have solidified Jesus claim as the Messiah.
  • It would have made Jesus big, in the eyes of the people.
  • They would have talked about this for days.
  • the Jerusalem Times would have ran the story on the front cover.
  • It would have been all over Facebook.
  • This story would have gone viral.
  • CNN would have come to interview Jesus.
  • What exposure.
  • Satan is trying to tempt Jesus and using His great love for His own people as the bait.
  • Jesus loved Israel so much (Matthew 23:37).
  • ‘So, here you are Jesus’, Satan is saying.
    • ‘You’re at the highest point.
    • You have the most exposure.
    • Everyone will be watching you throw yourself down.
    • They’ll see the angels catch you.
    • They’ll be super impressed by your spirituality, Jesus.
    • People will be so impressed with your ministry and your vision, Jesus.
    • They will gladly follow you.
    • And, this miracle will cause your mission to explode so much faster.’
  • So, Satan tempts Jesus with the pride of having a spiritual encounter.
  • He tries to seduce Jesus with an ‘angel catch me while I’m falling’ experience so He can ride the fast track to the top.
  • What a testimony that would have been.
  • Jesus might have thought He was pretty spiritual to have the angels to catch Him on command.
  • But, pride is always problematic.

Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)
18 Pride goeth before destruction, And an haughty spirit before a fall.

  • Satan tempts Jesus to take a fall knowing it will cause a fall.
  • If Jesus had given in to these thoughts and jumped, He would have been killed.
  • Jesus instead chooses the right way, the long way.
  • The way of the cross.
  • The plan of God.
  • And because He successfully resisted Satan in the area of pride, you now have His victory wrapped up in His Name.
  • Jesus experienced temptation in all points like we were.

Hebrews 4:15 (NKJV)
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

  • Jesus experienced it and overcame it.
  • Overcome it means, He never allowed temptation to change the way He walked.
  • He never allowed temptation to change the way he obeyed God.
  • He stayed on course, and on track the whole way through.
  • So, Jesus life was about overcoming temptation.
  • His Name stands for that.
  • Because His Name stands for that, you can now take His Name which he has made available for you and use it against temptation.
  • Jesus victory is your victory.
  • The same victory He enjoyed, you can enjoy.
